Phenibut is a nootropic medicine.

Removes tension, anxiety and fear, improves sleep. It prolongs the latent period and shortens the duration and severity of nystagmus, has an antiepileptic effect.

Limits manifestations of asthenia and vasovetegetative symptoms, including headache, a feeling of heaviness in the head, sleep disturbances, irritability, emotional lability, increases mental performance. Improves psychological parameters: attention, memory, speed and accuracy of sensory-motor reactions.

Patients from the first days of therapy feel better, interest and initiative, motivation of activity are increased.
Phenibut administration after severe traumatic brain injury increases the number of mitochondria in perifocal areas and improves bioenergetic processes in the brain.

Phenibut also has an antioxidant effect.

When used in the elderly, Phenibut does not cause congestion or excessive lethargy.

Normalizes lipid peroxidation processes. Does not affect the choline and adrenoreceptors.

Indications

Pharmacological effect

Aminophenylbutyric acid (AOA) normalizes metabolic processes in nerve cells of the brain. The active substance can be considered as a derivative of gamma-aminobutyric acid or as a derivative of beta-phenylethylamine. Aminophenylbutyric acid has nootropic activity, and as a GABA derivative it has anti-anxiety (anxiolytic) activity. Does not affect choline and adrenergic receptors.
The active substance reduces tension, anxiety, fear and improves sleep, so it is used to treat neuroses and before operations. ROS prolongs and enhances the effect of hypnotic, narcotic, neuroleptic and antiparkinsonian drugs.
ROS lacks anticonvulsant activity. The active substance lengthens the latent period of nystagmus and shortens its duration and severity. The active substance also reduces the manifestations of asthenia and vasovegetative symptoms, including headache, a feeling of heaviness in the head, sleep disturbances, irritability, emotional lability and increases mental performance. Psychological indicators (attention, memory, speed and accuracy of sensorimotor reactions) improve under the influence of ROS, in contrast to the influence of tranquilizers. In patients with asthenia and in emotionally labile patients, from the first days of therapy, subjective well-being improves, interest and initiative, and motivation for activity increase.

Composition

Each tablet contains:
Active ingredient: Aminophenylbutyric acid hydrochloride – 250 mg (phenibut)
Excipients:
lactose monohydrate – 180 mg
pregelatinized corn starch – 57.7 mg
Searic acid – 5 mg

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients of the drug, acute renal failure, pregnancy, breastfeeding, children under 3 years of age.

Side Effects

Frequency unknown – hypersensitivity reactions (including urticaria, itching, erythema, rash, angioedema, facial swelling, tongue swelling)
Frequency unknown – drowsiness (at the beginning of treatment), dizziness, headache (when taken at a dose of more than 2 g per day, when the dose is reduced, the severity of the side effect decreases)
Frequency unknown – nausea (at the beginning of treatment)
Rarely – allergic reactions (skin itching, rash)
Frequency unknown – with long-term use of high doses – hepatotoxicity

Interaction

When used together, Phenibut prolongs and enhances the effect of hypnotics, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants.

Overdose

The drug is low toxic. There have been no reports of overdose cases. Symptoms: drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness. With long-term use of high doses, eosinophilia, decreased blood pressure, impaired renal function, and fatty liver may develop (taking more than 7 g).
Treatment: gastric lavage, symptomatic treatment, maintenance of vital functions. There is no specific antidote.
