Lutein is a natural pigment belonging to the group of hydroxylated carotenoids-xanthophylls. Lutein is unevenly distributed in the tissues of the eye: the yellow spot of the retina contains up to 70% of its total content in the eye. In addition to the retina and the underlying pigment epithelium, it is found in the choroid, iris, lens, and ciliary body. The concentration of lutein decreases exponentially from the center of the retina to its periphery.
