Opatanol is an anti-allergic.
Pharmacodynamics
Olopatadine is a selective inhibitor of histamine H1 receptors, and also inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators from mast cells. It has a pronounced anti-allergic effect.
It has no effect on α-adrenergic, dopamine, muscarinic type 1 and 2, and serotonin receptors.
Pharmacokinetics
In topical administration, systemic absorption is low. Cmax of olopatadine in plasma is reached within 2 h and is 0.5 ng/mL or less to 1.3 ng/mL.
T1/2 in plasma is 3 h. It is excreted mainly by the kidneys. 60-70% is unchanged.
Indications
Allergic conjunctivitis.

Special instructions
Before instilling the drug, the lenses should be removed and put back no earlier than 20 minutes after instillation of the drug, because Opatanol contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by contact lenses.
Do not touch the tip of the pipette to any surface to avoid contaminating the solution.
If the patient’s vision temporarily decreases after using the drug, it is not recommended to drive a car or engage in activities that require increased attention until it is restored.

Pregnancy
There is no sufficient experience with the use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation. The use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation is possible when the expected therapeutic effect exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.
Application in pediatrics.
There is no sufficient experience in using the drug in children under 3 years of age. Opatanol can be used in pediatrics in children aged 3 years and older in doses similar to adults.
Contraindications
Individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Side Effects
Local. In some cases (less than 5%): blurred vision, burning and pain in the eyes, lacrimation, sensation of a foreign body in the eye, conjunctival hyperemia, keratitis, iritis, swelling of the eyelids.
In 0.1–1% of cases, weakness, headache, dizziness, nausea, pharyngitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, and changes in taste are noted.

Interaction
If necessary, can be used in combination with other local ophthalmic drugs. In this case, the interval between their use should be at least 5 minutes.
Overdose
When applied topically, an overdose is unlikely. If excess amounts of the drug get into your eyes, it is recommended to rinse your eyes with warm water.
