The OMRON PFM20 Peak Flow Meter helps monitor asthma by measuring maximum expiratory volume, peak expiratory velocity.
Directions for use
How to use the OMRON PFM20 Peak Flow Meter
1. If necessary, insert the mouthpiece into the Peak Flow Meter. Make sure that the arrow points to zero.
2. Hold the Peak Flow Meter in your hand so that your fingers do not cover the scale and air holes. Do not cover the holes on the Peak Flow Meter or the holes on the mouthpiece.
3. Stand up if possible. Take a deep breath, cup your lips around the mouthpiece while holding the pacloflowmeter horizontally, then exhale as hard as you can. Do not allow saliva to get into the Peak Flow Meter and do not cough into it, as it will distort the measurement.
4. Record the reading of the scale where the arrow points. If you get an abnormal result and there are no signs of the peak flow meter malfunction, consult your doctor.
5. Move the arrow back to the zero position and repeat the procedure two more times to get three readings. Mark the highest of the three results in the table.
Special Instructions
- Cleaning instructions (for individual use)
Immerse the peak flow meter in a warm (but not hot) mild detergent solution for 2-3 minutes (5 minutes maximum). rinse the picfloumeter in the solution to ensure thorough cleaning.
Then rinse it in clean, warm water and shake it gently to remove any residual water. Allow it to dry before using it again.
- Disposal instructions
The OMRON PFM20 Picroflow Meter can be disposed of with normal household waste.
At the end of its life, the product must be disposed of in accordance with national and regional regulations. In medical institutions in accordance with the requirements of SanPiN 2.1.7.2790-10 “Sanitary-epidemiological requirements for the handling of medical waste” the product is to be disposed as a Class A product (epidemiologically safe waste, close to solid domestic waste).
Caution!
Do not attempt to remove the coloured clips once attached to the OMRON PFM20 Peak Flow Meter. They are designed to stay in place and not move. If too much force is applied, the locking mechanism may break. This device is not a toy. Caution. Small parts that can cause a choking hazard if caught in the respiratory tract.
Features
- Pickflowmeter care and use
This Peakflow Meter requires little maintenance (except cleaning). It is very important to keep the peak flow meter clean while it is being used. It should be cleaned at least every six months, and especially if it has not been used for some time. Otherwise fungal growths could occur.
The mouthpiece is removable and should be disinfected before each use with a proprietary disinfectant solution such as Dettol. The OMRON PFM20 should only be used by one patient.
- How to record readings
It is very important for you to record the peak flow meter readings. You should take three measurements twice a day: first in the morning, and then at bedtime unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.
Dot the highest of the three peak flow meter readings in the Peak Flow Diary every day, morning and bedtime. By connecting the dots (see example on the sheet below), you can see how your maximum exhalation rate changes from day to day.
If you suddenly have wheezing or shortness of breath at any time of day or night, be sure to measure and record your maximum exhalation rate with the peakflow meter.
- Use an area monitoring system
It is very important to record your maximum exhalation rate reading. Readings should be taken twice a day, morning and evening before going to bed, or as instructed by your physician. Each time, record the maximum reading on the chart provided.
Mark the reading on the chart with a dot, which represents the highest reading obtained each day in each series of three measurements in the morning and evening. By connecting the dots (see chart), you can trace the dynamics of the maximum exhalation rate over several days. Measuring the maximum exhalation rate and recording the maximum result should also be performed at any time of the day or night, when you suddenly feel an asthma attack or difficulty breathing.
The three-zone monitoring system, organized according to the traffic light principle, involves the use of colored plastic clips. It has already proven in practice to be useful for patients who monitor asthma according to readings of maximum exhalation velocity. After identifying the green, yellow and red zones, write down their values in the area below. Then place the zone markers on the peak flow meter according to these zone values. In the same area, space is provided for recording the actions to be taken according to the treatment plan depending on the maximum exhalation rate reading.
General principles of the zone monitoring system are listed below and are generally determined by your physician or nurse.
