The components of the drug Oftolik have keratoprotective effect – protect the cornea from drying out and irritation.

The active substances of this drug (povidone and polyvinyl alcohol) after instillation decrease surface tension of the tear film and decrease the possibility of its damage.

Polyvinyl alcohol has properties similar to those of natural mucin (the main component of mucus which normally prevents the eye from drying out) which softens and moistens the corneal surface.

The action of the drops starts immediately after instillation and there is no systemic absorption.

Indications

To eliminate symptoms of dryness, irritation and discomfort of the eyes caused by external factors, with “dry eye syndrome” in patients using contact lenses.

Indicated as a tear substitute (“artificial tears”) in patients with reduced tear secretion.

Pharmacological effect

Special instructions

It is contraindicated to use the drug if the color of the solution has changed or it has become cloudy. In order to prevent infection of the mucous membrane of the eye, it is necessary to ensure that the tip of the pipette does not touch the skin, surface of the eye or other surfaces when using the drug.

The patient should stop using the drug and consult a doctor if:

when using drops, the pain intensifies;
vision deteriorates;
symptoms persist for more than 72 hours;
Redness and irritation of the eyes persist.

The drug contains benzalkonium chloride, so before instillation of the drug it is necessary to remove contact lenses; they can be put on 20 minutes after using the drug.

Pregnancy

There is no sufficient experience with the use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation.

The use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding) is possible only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

Interaction

Polyvinyl alcohol undergoes an esterification reaction, characteristic of compounds with secondary hydroxy groups. It is destroyed in strong acids and softens or dissolves in weak acids and alkalis. In high concentrations, polyvinyl alcohol is incompatible with inorganic salts, especially phosphates and sulfates.

Precipitation of 5% polyvinyl alcohol may be caused by reaction with phosphates. Gel formation from a polyvinyl alcohol solution can occur in the presence of borax.

Povidone solution is compatible with many inorganic salts, natural and synthetic resins and other substances.

Interacts in solution with sulfathiazole, sodium salicylate, salicylic acid, phenobarbital, tannin and other substances. The effectiveness of some preservatives (for example, thiomersal) may be reduced due to the formation of complexes with povidone.
