Naxogene® is a chemotherapeutic drug showing activity against Trichomonas vaginalis and other protozoa (including Giardia intestinalis and Entamoeba histolytica) as well as against anaerobic bacteria, namely Bacteroides and Gardnerella vaginalis.
The minimum trichomonacid concentration ranges from 0.3 to 3 µg/ml.
Pharmacokinetics
Naxogene® is well absorbed after oral administration. After three doses of 1 g nimorazole every 12 hours, the drug’s blood concentration reaches 16 mcg/mL 3 hours after the first dose, 28 mcg/mL by the 25th hour, and 7.5 mcg/mL after the last dose.
Naxogene® is excreted primarily through the kidneys; concentrations of nimorazole and its active metabolites in urine and vaginal secretion significantly exceed trichomonacid concentrations. After three doses of Naxojin® at a dose of 1 g every 12 h, the concentration of nimorazole in vaginal secretion, measured at 24, 48 and 72 h, was 129 µg/g, 95 µg/g and 4 µg/g, respectively.
