The main active ingredient of the drug is the hydrophilic fiber containing shell of Indian plantain seeds. Additional inactive components of Mucofolk are: sodium alginate, citric acid, sucrose, dextrin, saccharine sodium, betacarotene, citrate and sodium chloride.

Hydrophilic fibers of plantain seed husks, entering the gastrointestinal tract, absorb water and swell. It is noteworthy that these fibers are capable of absorbing an amount of water that is tens of times greater than their own weight. The volume of the intestinal contents increases, and at the same time there is a softening of the stool mass.

Fibers of plantain seed shells stimulate intestinal peristalsis, thereby facilitating the excretion of feces. Reviews of Mucofolca indicate that the drug is an effective laxative.

The active ingredient of the drug is not absorbed into the blood from the gastrointestinal tract, and is excreted with the feces.

Indications

According to the instructions, the indications for the use of Mucofalk are: chronic constipation;

irritable bowel syndrome;

diarrhea of various origin;

Diseases and different conditions which require light defecation – anal fissures, hemorrhoids, post-operative period after rectal surgery and pregnancy.

How to take, the dosage

Instructions for Mucofalk contains the following recommendations for dosage of the drug: for adults and children over 12 years old use one teaspoon of the drug from 2 to 6 times a day, depending on the patient’s condition.

The contents of one sachet of the drug is diluted in one glass of cool drinking water, and then the resulting solution is drunk.

The use of Mucofolk must be accompanied by sufficient fluid intake (not less than 2-2.5 liters of water per day) to avoid dehydration.

The duration of the course of treatment is determined by the attending physician.

The duration of taking Mucofolk according to the instructions has no time limits.

Interaction

Do not prescribe simultaneously with anti-diarrheal drugs, as well as with drugs that inhibit intestinal motility.

The interval of 30-60 minutes between taking Mucofolk and other drugs should be observed.

In patients with insulin-dependent diabetes it may be necessary to reduce the dose of insulin.

Contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Mucofolk are: hypersensitivity to the components of the drug; organic constriction of the digestive tube; intestinal obstruction and the risk of its development; severe form of diabetes; disorders of water-electrolyte balance; childhood age below 12 years, due to insufficient study of the drug safety in this patient group; simultaneous use of antidiarrheal drugs, because of the risk of intestinal obstruction.

In addition, it should be known that the use of the drug in question reduces absorption of other drugs, especially those containing iron. Therefore, the interval between doses of such drugs should be 1-2 hours.
