Pharmacodynamics

Simethicone is a chemically inert methylsiloxane polymer containing about 5% silicon dioxide.

Simethicone has foaming and anti-foaming properties and significantly reduces the surface tension of purified water and model surfactant solutions. The results of foaming experiments demonstrated complete foam destruction within 3-6 seconds when adding a liquid suspension of simethicone at a concentration of 0.1 mg/ml. Below this threshold, complete foam destruction does not occur. As a defoamer simethicone is also effective at a concentration of 0.1 mg/ml. This effect lasts for more than 24 hours.

The mechanism of action is based on the distribution of the silicone liquid over the surface of the foam film as well as on a local change in surface tension in the contact area. This causes rapid drainage of the liquid, which helps to break up the film, with the consequent possibility for the released gas to be absorbed or expelled naturally.

Simethicone is a chemically inert substance that has no physiological activity and is not absorbed, passed through the digestive tract and eliminated as is.

Indications

Symptomatic treatment of flatulence (excessive gas and bloating) associated with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract – including those caused by functional dyspepsia.

How to take, the dosage

Inside. Take 1 capsule 3 times a day after a meal with a small amount of water. The maximum daily dose is not more than 3 capsules (360 mg).

If after treatment the improvement does not come or symptoms worsen, or new symptoms appear, it is necessary to consult a physician. Use the drug only according to the indications, the method of administration and in the doses specified in the instructions for use.

Special Instructions

If the medication has expired or is out of date, do not throw it down the drain or into the street! Put the medicine in a bag and put it in the trash. These measures will help protect the environment!

The effect of the drug on the ability to drive vehicles, machinery

The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles or engage in other potentially dangerous activities requiring increased concentration and rapid psychomotor reactions.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to simethicone or other components of the drug, children under 18 years of age, intestinal obstruction.

Side effects

Frequency of adverse reactions is given as the following gradation: very common (≥1/10); common (≥1/100, < 1/10); infrequent (≥1/1000, < 1/100); rare (≥1/10000, < 1/1000); very rare (< 1/10000), including individual reports of unspecified frequency (frequency cannot be calculated based on available data).

According to post-registration use

Gastrointestinal tract disorders: Very rare: vomiting.

Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Very rarely: angioedema, rash, allergic reactions to the drug components.

Pregnancy use

There are no clinical data on the effects of simethicone when used during pregnancy.

Simethicone may only be used during pregnancy if the anticipated benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus, taking into account the fact that simethicone is physiologically inactive and is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. There are no data on excretion of simethicone with the breast milk.
