Mexifin belongs to the group of compounds of 3-oxypyridine and succinic acid and has antioxidant, antihypoxic, membrane stabilizing, nootropic, stress-protective, anticonvulsant and anxiolytic effects.

Mexifin acts as an inhibitor of free radicals, inhibits lipid peroxidation, increases the activity of antioxidant enzyme system, restores the structure and function of membranes disturbed in various pathologies, modulates the effect on membrane-bound enzymes (calcium-independent phosphodiesterase, adenylate cyclase, acetylcholindinesterase), ion channels, receptor complexes, including benzodiazepine, GABA, acetylcholine; improves transport of neurotransmitters, synaptic transmission and interconnection of brain structures.

Enhances content of dopamine in the brain. The mechanism of action of mexiphine is due to its ability to enhance compensatory activation of aerobic glycolysis. It decreases the degree of inhibition of oxidative processes in the Krebs cycle in hypoxia by increasing the content of ATP and creatine phosphate, helps to maintain the structural and functional organization of biomembranes.

Mexifin improves cerebral metabolism and blood supply of the brain, corrects disorders in the regulatory and microcirculatory systems by inhibiting constriction of arterioles and precapillaries; Improves blood rheology by reducing platelet aggregation, stabilizing membrane structures of blood cells (erythrocytes and platelets), prevents hemolysis; improves immune system activity.

Mexifin has anti-atherogenic effect, causing regression of atherosclerotic changes in the arteries, reducing levels of cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins and restoring lipid homeostasis.

Mexifin improves performance and resistance to various extreme damaging factors of oxygen-dependent pathological conditions (shock, stress, hypoxia and ischemia, cerebral blood flow disorders, physical and mental overload), intoxication with alcohol and antipsychotic drugs (neuroleptics).

Indications

Headache, Anxiety, Stenocardia, Impaired attention and memory, Heart pain, Dizziness, Weakness and fatigue – acute disorders of cerebral circulation;
– craniocerebral trauma, consequences of craniocerebral injuries;
– discirculatory encephalopathy;
– vegetative dystonia syndrome;
– light cognitive disorders of atherosclerotic genesis;
– anxiety disorders in neurotic and neurosis-like conditions;
– acute myocardial infarction. – Acute myocardial infarction (during the first day) as a part of complex therapy;
– Primary open-angle glaucoma of different stages as a part of complex therapy;
– Control of withdrawal syndrome in alcoholism with prevalence of neurosis-like and vegetovascular disorders;
– acute intoxication with antipsychotic agents;
– acute purulent inflammatory processes of the abdominal cavity (acute necrotizing pancreatitis, peritonitis) as a part of complex therapy.

How to take, the dosage

Mexifin is administered intramuscularly or intravenously (by trickle or drip). Doses are chosen individually. Duration of treatment and dosing regimen depends on the severity of the patient’s condition and effectiveness of treatment. Treatment starts with a dose of 50-100 mg 1-3 times a day, gradually increasing the dose to obtain therapeutic effect. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 800 mg.

In case of infusion method the drug should be diluted in physiological sodium chloride solution.

Mexifin is administered by jetting slowly over 5-7 minutes; by drip – at a rate of 60 drops per minute.

Acute cerebral circulation disorders: as part of combined therapy, 200-300 mg intravenously by drip for the first 2-4 days, then 100 mg intramuscularly 3 times a day. Course duration is 10-14 days.

Discirculatory encephalopathy (decompensation phase): intravenously by shot or dropwise by 100 mg 2-3 times per day for 14 days followed by intramuscular injection by 100 mg per day for further 14 days.

Prevention of discirculatory encephalopathy: intramuscularly 100 mg 2 times daily for 10-14 days.

Mild cognitive impairment in elderly patients and in patients with anxiety disorders: intramuscularly 100-300 mg daily for 14-30 days.

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome: 100-200 mg intramuscularly 2-3 times a day or intravenous drip 1-2 times a day for 5-7 days.

Acute intoxication with neuroleptics: intravenously 50-300 mg per day for 7-14 days depending on the severity of the condition.

In cases of neurotic disorders and vascular dystonia the drug is prescribed intramuscularly in a dose of 50-400 mg per day for 14 days.

Contraindications

Acute liver and kidney function abnormalities, hypersensitivity to the drug.

Prenatal age, pregnancy, breast-feeding – due to insufficient study of the drug action in these categories of patients.
