Marvelon is a combination oral contraceptive. Each pill contains small amounts of two different female sex hormones: desogestrel (progestagen) and ethinyl estradiol (estrogen).

Because of the small amounts of hormones, Marvelon is considered a low-dose oral contraceptive.

Since all the pills in a pack contain the same amount of the same hormones, Marvelon is classified as a monophasic combination oral contraceptive.

The drug also has an additional noncontraceptive pharmacological effect:

• After taking the drug, menstruation becomes less abundant and painful;
• .Women taking birth control pills are less likely to have anemia, some diseases of the uterus, ovaries, mammary glands;
• It has a beneficial effect on the skin, especially improving its condition in vulgar acne.
  After discontinuation of the drug the ability to conceive is quickly restored.

How to take, the dosage

Overly, in the order shown on the package, at approximately the same time each day, if necessary, with a small amount of water.

Take 1 tablet daily for 21 days. The pills from the next package should be started 7 days after the end of the previous one. During these 7 days, menstrual bleeding occurs. It usually begins on the 2nd or 3rd day after taking the last pill and may not stop until you start taking the pill from the next package.

How to start Marvelon^® if hormonal contraceptives have not been used in the last month

The pills should start on day 1 of your menstrual cycle. It is possible to start taking the pills on days 2-5 after the start of your menstrual cycle, but in this case we recommend using an additional (non-hormonal) contraceptive method for the first 7 days of taking the pills in the initial cycle.

Transitioning from other combined oral contraceptives

It is preferable to start Marvelon^® the day after taking the last pill of the previously used hormone-containing medication, at the most immediate after a break in the pill or after taking a pill that does not contain hormones.

Transitioning from progestagen-only drugs (mini-pills, injectables, implants)

A woman taking a mini-pill can switch to Marvelon^® any day: using an implant, on the day it is removed; using the drug as an injection, on the day the next injection is given. In all cases, in the first 7 days of taking Marvelon^® it is recommended to use additional contraceptive methods.

After a first trimester abortion

The woman may begin taking the drug immediately. There is no need to use any additional methods of contraception.

After childbirth or a 2nd trimester abortion

It is recommended that the drug be started 21 or 28 days after childbirth or a 2nd trimester abortion. If starting at a later date, barrier contraception is recommended for the first 7 days of taking Marvelon^®. In any case, if a woman has already had sexual intercourse after childbirth or abortion before starting Marvelon^®, you should rule out pregnancy before starting the drug or wait until her first menstrual period.

The use of the drug is contraindicated during lactation.

If the next pill is missed

If the next pill is missed for less than 12 hours, the reliability of contraception is not reduced. A woman should take the pill as soon as she remembers it, and take subsequent pills at the usual time.

If the next pill is delayed for more than 12 hours, contraceptive reliability may be reduced. In this case, the following rules should be followed:

1 week

The woman should take the missed pill as soon as she remembers it, even if that means taking 2 pills at a time. Then she should continue taking it as usual. Additionally, a barrier contraception method should be used for the next 7 days. If the woman had sexual contacts during the previous 7 days, the possibility of pregnancy should be considered. The more pills are missed, and the closer the break in taking the drug to the time of sexual intercourse, the higher the risk of pregnancy.

2 week

The woman should take the missed pill as soon as she remembers it, even if that means taking 2 pills at a time. The woman should then continue taking it as usual. Provided that the woman took the pills on time during the 7 days preceding the first missed dose, there is no need to use additional (non-hormonal) contraceptive methods. Otherwise, or if the woman missed more than 1 pill, additional contraceptive methods are recommended for the next 7 days.

3 weeks

The reliability of contraception may be reduced by the subsequent interruption of the drug. This can be avoided by adapting the drug’s regimen. If either of the following two regimens is used, no additional contraceptive measures are necessary, as long as the woman took the pills on time in the 7 days preceding the first missed dose.

If not, then either of the following two regimens and additional contraceptive measures are recommended for the next 7 days.

The woman should take the missed pill as soon as she remembers it, even if this means taking 2 pills at a time. Then she should continue taking it as usual. A new pack should be started as soon as the current pack is finished, i.e., no interruption should be made. It is unlikely that you will have a bleeding discontinuation before the end of the second dose, but some women may have a heavy bleeding discontinuation while taking the drug.

You may be advised to stop taking the drug from the current package. A woman should take up to 7 days off Marvelon®, including the days she forgot to take the pills, and then start a new package.

If you miss taking the medication and then do not bleed at the next break in the medication, the possibility of pregnancy should be considered.

Recommendations if vomiting occurs

If vomiting occurs within 3-4 hours of taking the drug, absorption may be incomplete. In this case, you should use the advice about skipping another dose of the drug. If the woman does not want to change her usual regimen, she should take additional tablet(s) from a different package.

How to change your period

In order to delay your period, continue taking pills from a different Marvelon^® package without your usual interruption. Menstruation can be delayed for any length of time until the pills from the second pack are finished. During this period, the woman may have oozing or profuse bloody discharge. Taking the drug according to the usual scheme should be resumed after a 7-day interval in the intake.

In order to shift menstruation to a different day of the week than would be expected with a regular regimen, it is possible to shorten the usual break in intake by as many days as necessary. The shorter the break, the greater the risk of not menstruating during the break and of having heavy or smeared bleeding while taking the drug from the second pack.

Interaction

Interaction with some drugs can lead to heavy bleeding and ineffectiveness of oral contraceptives. Such cases have been observed with hydantoins, barbiturates, primidone, carbamazepine, rifampicin, isoniazid; they are possible with oxcarbamazepine, topiramate, felbamate and griseofulvin.

Decreased efficacy of oral contraceptives has also been observed with some antibiotics, such as ampicillin, tetracycline, neomycin, penicillins, chloramphenicol, and activated charcoal and laxatives.

Marvelone reduces the effectiveness of oral anticoagulants, anxiolytics (diazepam), tricyclic antidepressants, theophylline, caffeine, hypoglycemic drugs, clofibrate, glucocorticosteroids.

Always tell the doctor who prescribes your birth control pills what medications you are already using. If your doctor prescribes other medications, tell him or her that you are taking Marvelon.

Special Instructions

Systematic medical examinations are indicated during the use of Marvelon.

With caution, the drug is prescribed if there is a high risk of thrombosis, signs of heart failure, heart valve lesions, atrial fibrillation, arterial hypertension, epilepsy, migraine, Crohn’s disease, and sickle cell anemia.

Smoking women over 35 years of age should stop smoking if they intend to use Marvelon for contraceptive purposes.

Estrogen-containing medications can temporarily increase the risk of thrombosis in patients who have undergone surgery and prolonged immobilization.

In women with abdominal tumors and/or severe abdominal pain, the presence of hepatocellular adenoma should be excluded.

Women who have chloasma (when using estrogen- and/or progesterone-containing medications) should avoid sun exposure.

The efficacy of Marvelon may be reduced if it is missed or if diarrhea and/or vomiting occurs in the first 4 hours after taking the drug.

Contraindications

You should not take Marvelon if you have any of the following diseases or conditions. You should tell your doctor before deciding whether to take Marvelon:

• Thrombosis (venous or arterial), current or history (including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, etc.)
• Present or past history of thrombosis (including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, stroke);
• Avoid current or past history of possible clinical manifestations of thrombosis (including coronary artery disease or stroke).
• Diabetes mellitus with vascular disease;
• The presence of severe or multiple risk factors for venous or arterial thrombosis (see side effects). “Side effects);
• Previous or current history of severe liver disease (if liver function has not returned to normal);
• An established or suspected hormone-dependent malignant tumor of the genitalia or mammary glands;
• Vaginal bleeding of unclear etiology;
• Prescribed or suspected pregnancy, lactation;
• Vaginal bleeding of unclear etiology.Hypersensitivity to any of the drug components;
• Migraine with focal neurological symptoms;
• Hypertriglyceridemia.

If the drug is used against any of the following conditions, you may require regular monitoring by a physician. Be sure to tell your doctor about the following conditions/diseases before you start taking this medicine:

• You smoke;
• You suffer from migraines;
• You suffer from epilepsy;
• You have diabetes;
• you are overweight
• you have high blood pressure
• you have heart valve disease or heart rhythm disorder
• you have inflammation of the veins
• You have inflammation of the veins (superficial thrombophlebitis);
• You have varicose veins;
• Your immediate family history of thrombosis, myocardial infarction, or stroke;
• You or a close relative has or had high blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels;
• any immediate family member has had breast cancer;
• you have liver or gallbladder disease;
you have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammatory bowel disease);
• you have systemic lupus erythematosus;
• Hemolytic uremic syndrome (bleeding disorder that causes kidney failure);
• You have or have had chloasma (yellow-brown discoloration of the skin, mostly on the face). In this case, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation.
  

Side effects

The following adverse reactions have been reported in people taking Marvelon:

• Headache, gastralgia, nausea, vomiting;

• Painfulness and engorgement of the breast;

• Body weight gain, impaired glucose tolerance, fluid retention;

• Changes in libido;

• Decreased mood;

• Oedema of the eyelids, skin rash, erythema nodosum, conjunctivitis, discomfort when wearing contact lenses;

• Thrombophlebitis, thromboembolism (may manifest as perceptual impairment: visual impairment, hearing loss);

• Generalized itching; <

• Cholestatic jaundice;

• Cholletithiasis;

• Increased BP;

• Intermenstrual bleeding, changes in vaginal secretion possible development of vaginal candidiasis.

• Long-term use (extremely rare) – chloasma, hepatocellular adenoma.

These may occur in the first few months of use and usually decrease over time.

Overdose

Serious effects of taking large amounts of Marvelon pills have not been reported.

If you take several pills at once, you may experience nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.

If you find that your child has swallowed a pill, see a doctor.
