Maalox, suspension 250 ml

Pharmgroup:

Antacid.

Pharmaceutical action:

Aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide neutralize free hydrochloric acid of gastric juice without causing its secondary hypersecretion. In addition, increase of gastric juice pH while taking Maalox® preparation leads to decrease of pepsin activity in gastric juice.

The drug also has adsorptive and coating effect, due to which the impact of damaging factors on the mucous membrane of the esophagus and the stomach is reduced.

Pharmacokinetics:

Magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide are considered topical antacids. Because of low absorption, they have no systemic action.

hydrogen peroxide 30% – 9.75 mg,

purified water – 4746.59 mg.

How to take, the dosage

Internal.

Adults and children over 15 years of age. Take the contents of 1-2 sachets (15 – 30 ml) 1-1.5 hours after a meal or when heartburn occurs. Before opening the mini-package, stir its contents gently, carefully kneading the package between your fingers. Squeeze the contents of the package into a spoon or into the mouth (take the suspension without prior dilution).

If necessary, an additional dose may be taken 2 hours after the previous dose. The maximum daily dose is 12 sachets (180 ml).

The course of treatment should not exceed 2-3 months. If used occasionally (for example, in case of discomfort after dietary abnormalities), take 1-2 sachets (15 – 30 ml) once.

In mild renal failure, the maximum daily dose is 8 sachets (120 ml), in moderate renal failure the maximum daily dose is 6 sachets (90 ml).

Interaction

Concomitant use of Maalox decreases absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, digoxin, indomethacin, acetylsalicylic acid (and other salicylates), histamine H2-receptor blockers, beta-adrenoblockers, aminazine, diflunisal, isoniazid, phenytoin, phosphorus containing drugs.

Simultaneous use of Maalox may increase the plasma level of quinidine which increases the risk of overdose.

Special Instructions

A 2-hour interval between taking Maalox and other medicinal products should be observed.

When the drug is prescribed to children, the dosage regimen should be determined individually; it is not recommended to use the drug in children under 12 years of age without medical advice.

Contraindications

Side effects

Immune system disorders: unknown frequency – hypersensitivity reactions such as itching, urticaria, angioedema and anaphylactic reactions.

Gastrointestinal disorders: infrequent – diarrhea, constipation.

Metabolic and nutritional disorders: unknown frequency – hypermagnesemia, hyperaluminemia, hypophosphatemia (with long-term treatment or high doses, or when taking standard doses with low phosphate in food), which may lead to increased bone resorption, hypercalciuria, osteomalacia.

Overdose

Symptoms of acute overdose with a combination of aluminum hydroxide and magnesium salts include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting.

In patients at risk, taking high doses of the drug may cause or worsen intestinal obstruction or intestinal obstruction.

Treatment: aluminum and magnesium are excreted in the urine. Treatment of acute overdose is done with fluid replacement and forced diuresis. Patients with renal insufficiency need hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.

Pregnancy use

It is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
