Antacid drug, has no systemic action. Its antacid capacity is equal to 20 mEq H+ per minipack (in vitro determination by Rossett-Rice method). The drug neutralizes free hydrochloric acid without causing secondary hypersecretion of hydrochloric acid. Due to the increase in pH when taking it, peptic activity of gastric juice is reduced. It also has adsorptive and coating effect, due to which the impact of damaging factors on the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum is reduced.

How to take, the dosage

The contents of 1-2 mini-packs are taken orally 1-1.5 hours after a meal or when heartburn occurs. If necessary, an additional dose of the drug may be taken 2 hours after the previous dose. The maximum daily dose is 12 mini-sachets. The course of treatment is not more than 2-3 months.

If used occasionally, for example, for discomfort after a bad diet, take 1-2 mini-packs once.

In mild renal failure, the maximum daily dose is 8 mini-packs. In moderate renal failure, the maximum daily dose is 6 mini-packs.

Before opening the mini-packet, stir the contents gently by carefully kneading the bag between your fingers. Squeeze the contents into a spoon or into the mouth (take the suspension without prior dilution).

Interaction

Concomitant use with quinidine may increase serum concentrations of quinidine and development of quinidine overdose.

Simultaneous administration of Maalox® mini decreases gastrointestinal absorption of the following drugs: histamine H2-receptor blockers, propranololol, atenolol, cefdinir, cefpodoxime, metoprolol, chloroquine, prostacyclines, diflunisal, digoxin, bisphosphonates, ethambutol, isoniazid, fluoroquinolones, sodium fluoride, GCS (described for prednisolone and dexamethasone), indomethacin, ketoconazole, lincosamides, phenothiazine derivatives neuroleptics, penicillamine, rosuvastatin, iron salts, levothyroxine sodium. In case of 2-hour interval between the intake of these drugs and Maalox® mini and 4-hour interval between fluoroquinolones and Maalox® mini in most cases this undesirable interaction can be avoided.

When co-administration of Maalox® mini with polystyrene sulfonate (cayexalate) caution should be exercised due to possible risk of decrease of potassium binding efficiency by resin and development of metabolic alkalosis in patients with renal failure (for aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide) and intestinal obstruction (for aluminum hydroxide).

When aluminum hydroxide is combined with citrates, plasma aluminum concentrations may be increased, especially in patients with renal insufficiency.
