Lipoic acid is a coenzyme involved in oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvic acid and alpha-keto acids and plays an important role in the energy balance of the body.

In terms of biochemical action lipoic acid is similar to the B vitamins.

Lipoic acid is involved in the regulation of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, has a lipotropic effect, affects cholesterol metabolism, improves liver function and has a detoxifying effect when poisoned with salts of heavy metals and other intoxications.

Indications

Used in the treatment of patients with steatohepatitis of various etiologies, with intoxication.

How to take, the dosage

Ingestion after meals. Adults – 0.05 g 3-4 times a day.

Children over 6 years of age – 0.012-0.024 g 2-3 times a day.

The course of treatment is 20-30 days.

If necessary the second course of treatment in 1 month is carried out by the doctor’s prescription.

Special Instructions

When using Lipoic acid in patients with diabetes mellitus, blood glucose should be determined more frequently and, if necessary, the dose of antidiabetic drugs should be reduced.

Do not drink alcohol during the treatment with Lipoic acid.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the drug.

Side effects

Dyspeptic phenomena (including nausea, vomiting, heartburn), allergic reactions (urticaria, anaphylactic shock); hypoglycemia are possible.
