The antibiotic produced by Streptomyces lincolniensis has a bacteriostatic effect.

Sensitive in vivo: Staphylococcus aureus (penicillinase-producing and nonproducing strains), Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Sensitive in vitro: Aerobic Gram-positive cocci – Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus spp. group viridans. Aerobic gram-positive bacilli – Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Anaerobic gram-positive spore-forming bacilli – Propionibacterium acnes. Anaerobic gram-positive spore-forming bacilli – Clostridium tetani, Clostridium perfringens.

Ineffective against most strains of Enterococcus faecalis; not effective against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae and other gram-negative bacteria; fungi and viruses. Optimal action is in alkaline environment (pH 8-8.5).

Lincomycin resistance develops slowly. In high doses it has a bactericidal effect.

Directions for use

Ingestion, 1-2 hours before a meal.

Adults and children over 12 years of age – 500 mg 3-4 times a day. Duration of treatment depending on the form and severity of the disease is 7-14 days (in case of osteomyelitis – 3 weeks or more).

In case of prolonged or repeated courses the treatment should be carried out under control of liver and kidney function.
