Pharmacological properties:
Ipeka is made from the root of Cephaelis ipecacuanha (Brot.) Rich., a Brazilian herbaceous plant also known as Ipekaquana Matto-Grosso. Chemical composition: starch, resin, mineral salts; alkaloids, isoquinoline derivatives (emetin, cefaelin, psychotrin); soluble tannin, ipecacuanha acid – remedy against diarrhea; heteroside (ipecacoside) – antispasmodic agent; allergy-inducing glycoproteins.

The composition of ipeca and properties of its alkaloids, in particular, explain its therapeutic use in allopathic medicine: in low doses Cephaelis ipecacuanha has expectorant effect (due to cefaelin) and is included in cough syrups; in higher doses the drug is used in powder or syrup as an emetic (due to emetin).
