An antiseptic when applied externally it has a bactericidal (against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant strains of Escherichia coli, Staphilococcus aureus and Proteus), antifungal action.
Indications
Treatment and prevention of purulent and indurated wounds, abrasions, burns, trophic ulcers and bedsores, osteomyelitis. Treatment of pyoderma, acne, infectious dermatitis, dermatomycosis, skin reactions after insect bites.
Active ingredient
Composition
1000 ml of solution contains:
Iodine – 14.1 g
Supplementary substances:
potassium iodide 13.8 g,
povidone low molecular weight 122.1 g,
water purified to 1000 ml.
How to take, the dosage
Iodine is used externally to treat damaged skin.
For oral administration the dose is set individually, depending on the indication and age of the patient.
Topically it is used for lacunae and supratonsillar spaces washing – 4-5 applications with 2-3 days intervals, for nasopharyngeal irrigation – 2-3 times a week for 2-3 months, for ear drops and flushing – for 2-4 weeks;
In surgical practice and in case of burns it is used to wet gauze cloths put on the affected surface as needed.
Interaction
Iodopyron solution is incompatible with ammonia solutions, essential oils, in contact with white sediment mercury (creates an explosive mixture). Antiseptic action of the drug is weakened by the presence of pus, fat, blood, acidic or alkaline environment. The solution reduces the strumogenic and hypothyroid effect of lithium preparations.

Special Instructions
Avoid getting the solution in the eyes.
Do not heat before use.
Do not use on insect bites of domestic or wild animals.
At the time of use, indicator papers for the detection of hidden bleeding in stools and urine may show false positives due to the strong oxidizing effect of povidone iodine.
The staining on skin and tissues is easily washed off with water.
The use of the drug does not affect driving and engaging in other potentially hazardous activities requiring increased concentration and quick psychomotor reactions.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, hyperthyroidism, Duhring’s dermatitis herpetiformis, thyroid adenoma, renal failure.
Side effects
On oral use:skin allergic reactions, tachycardia, nervousness, sleep disturbances, increased sweating, diarrhea (in patients over 40 years).
In external use: rarely – skin irritation; with prolonged use on extensive wound surfaces – iodism (rhinitis, urticaria, Quincke’s edema, salivation, lacrimation, acne).
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose: irritation at the application site.
Treatment: symptomatic.
Long-term use (more than 7-10 days) may cause iodism phenomenon (“metallic” taste in the mouth increased salivation swelling of eyes or throat, etc.) on appearance of which the drug should be stopped and a doctor should be consulted.
Iodine may damage the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) if accidentally swallowed. The stomach should be flushed with 05% sodium thiosulfate solution as an antidote orally used activated charcoal starch paste flour broth mucous drink milk and/or intravenously every 4 hours 10 ml 10% sodium thiosulfate solution as well as symptomatic therapy.
