Pharmacological group:
Homeopathic monocomponent drug of herbal origin
Pharmacological properties:
Ignatia is a curly shrub growing in the Philippines; belongs to the species of poisonous nut trees. The fruit is a crusted berry, approximately 10 cm in diameter, containing numerous seeds in the middle of a yellowish pulp.
Chemical composition: large amounts of indole alkaloids: strychnine (60% of all alkaloids) and brucine. The composition is similar to that of the vomiting nut (Nux vomica), but Ignatia contains more strychnine.
Ignatia amara has psychostimulant effects due to the presence of alkaloids, which are competitive inhibitors of the neutrotransmitter glycine (see Nux vomica).
