Pharmacological group: Homeopathic monocomponent drug of herbal origin
Pharmacological properties:
St. John’s Wort is an herbaceous plant with leaves covered with numerous small translucent secretory pockets, in the light resembling perforations; this probably explains the Latin name.
Hypericum perforatum has a sedative effect, probably associated with the synergistic effect of substances of several groups (flavonoids, naphthodiantrons); an antidepressant and anxiolytic effect associated with the influence on neurotransmitters and melatonin synthesis; an antibacterial effect due to the presence of essential oil and hyperforin.
Matrix tincture of St. John’s wort increases the activity of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes; thus, can accelerate the metabolism of certain drugs.
