Pharmacological action
Yellow jasmine or Carolina jasmine is a creeping shrub growing in the wild in the southeastern United States; the plant came to Europe in the 17th century.
The chemical composition:
– resin;
– lipids;
– sterols;
– alkaloids with an indole structure:
o gelsemin,
o gelsemicin, a highly toxic substance little known and present in the plant in small amounts;
o sempervirin;
o gelsedin;
– hydroxycoumarin (scopoletol).
Indications
Key symptoms for prescribing the drug
fatigue, general weakness, lethargy, stupor, trembling inside;
generalized pain;
feeling of heaviness in the limbs;
diplopia;
headache with previous visual disturbances;
headache in the back of the head, spreading to the muscles of the neck and shoulders;
sensation that “the heart will stop beating if the patient does not move.”
Main clinical applications
Infectology
influenza and influenza-like syndrome. Gelsemium is prescribed in the presence of the following symptoms:
prostration and tremor, sometimes pronounced;
venous congestion in the brain, manifested by facial hyperemia and severe headache;
pain and feeling of heaviness in the limbs;
lack of thirst;
dengue fever in pseudoinfluenza form
Neurology
headaches and migraines:
congestive headache, mainly in the back of the head, spreading to the muscles of the neck and shoulders, as well as severe pain in the eyeballs;
migraine, especially the ophthalmoplegic form (Moebius syndrome), when the pain is relieved with the appearance of visual disturbances. Such disorders are usually accompanied by apathy and prostration, and improve with a high position of the head or profuse urination.
neuropraxia due to prolonged compression or stretching;
tremor, which intensifies when the emotional state is disturbed;
myasthenia gravis.
Behavioral disorders
anxiety neurosis: with depression with excessive concern, memory impairment, tremors and emotionally-related diarrhea or pollakiuria;
anxiety (the drug is prescribed for symptoms similar to the previous ones that occur daily);
consequences of severe affective or emotional shock;
insomnia (if it occurs simultaneously with anxiety).
