Geviscon® Dual Action effectively relieves both heartburn and heaviness in the stomach: 1) quickly neutralizes excess stomach acid; 2) enters the stomach and interacts with its contents, forming a protective barrier (raft), which prevents heartburn.

Antacid drug. When taken orally, the drug reacts quickly with the acidic contents of the stomach. It forms alginate gel which has almost neutral pH value. The gel forms a protective barrier on the surface of the stomach contents, preventing the occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux.

In case of regurgitation, the gel is more likely to enter the esophagus, where it reduces mucosal irritation.

Calcium carbonate quickly neutralizes the hydrochloric acid of gastric juice, alleviating the sensation of heartburn and digestive disturbances. This effect is enhanced by the presence in the drug of sodium bicarbonate, which also has a neutralizing effect. Total acid-neutralizing activity of the drug in the minimum dose (2 tablets) is approximately 10 mEq.

Indications

Treatment of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, such as sour belching, heartburn, dyspepsia, feeling of heaviness in the stomach after a meal, in patients with hyperacidity of gastric juices or in pregnancy.

The drug contains calcium carbonate, which has antacid activity, therefore at least 2 hours should pass between taking Gaviscon® Double Action and other drugs, especially when concomitant use with histamine H2-receptor blockers, tetracycline antibiotics, digoxin, fluoroquinolones, iron salts, ketoconazole, neuroleptics, levothyroxine sodium, thyroid hormones, penicillamine, beta-adrenoblockers (atenololol, metoprolol, propranolol), GCS, chloroquine, bisphosphonates and estramustine.

Special Instructions

The dose of 2 tablets has a sodium content of 110.75 mg (4.82 mmol). This should be considered when a salt-limited diet is necessary, e.g., in congestive heart failure and mild renal failure.

Each dose of 2 tablets contains 150 mg (3.75 mmol) of calcium. Therefore, caution should be exercised when treating patients with hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis, and urolithiasis with oxalate stone formation.

Because of its aspartame content, the drug should not be used in patients with phenylketonuria.

The drug Gaviscon® Double Action contains antacids which may mask the symptoms of serious gastrointestinal diseases.

The drug may be less effective in patients with low gastric acidity. Patients with gastroenteritis or suspected renal insufficiency have an increased risk of hypernatremia when using the drug.

The drug should not be used for a long time. If symptoms persist after 7 days of use, the patient should see a physician to revise the therapy.

The effect of the drug on driving and operating machinery

The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery as well as engage in other potentially dangerous activities requiring increased concentration and quick psychomotor reactions.

Evaluation of the incidence of adverse reactions is performed on the basis of the following criteria: very common (≥1/10), common (≥1/100, <1/10), infrequent (≥1/1000, <1/100), rare (≥1/10 000, <1/1000), very rare (<1/10 000) and unknown (frequency cannot be calculated from available data).

Immune system disorders: frequency unknown – anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions, hypersensitivity reactions (urticaria).

Respiratory system disorders: frequency unknown – respiratory effects (bronchospasm).

If any of the side effects listed in the instructions are aggravated or other side effects not listed in the instructions are noted, the patient should inform the physician.

Overdose

Symptoms: bloating.

Treatment: symptomatic therapy.
