Furazolidon, tablets 50 mg 10 pcs

The drug belongs to the antimicrobial and antiprotozoal agents.

It has bacteriostatic action against microbes. Mechanism of action is disruption of activity of some enzyme systems in bacteria.

Spectrum of action: gram-positive cocci (Streptococcus, Staphylococcus), gram-negative bacilli (Escherichia, Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus, Klebsiella, Enterobacter), protozoa (Lamblia).

The most sensitive pathogens of intestinal infections are dysentery, typhoid and paratyphoid pathogens. Resistance develops slowly.

How to take, the dosage

The drug is taken orally after a meal with plenty of fluid (100-200 ml).

In dysentery, paratyphoid, food toxic infections adults are prescribed 2-3 tablets (100-150 mg) 4 times a day (but not more than 800 mg) for 5-10 days. Children over 8 years of age are prescribed at the rate of 6-7 mg per kg body weight per day; the daily dose is divided into 4 doses. Course duration depends on the severity of the disease and effectiveness and sensitivity to therapy.

In case of giardiasis the drug is prescribed for adults at the rate of 2 tg of 6^yotkShKSh|1^da?ae^yas|day; children over 8 years old are prescribed the drug at the rate of 6 mg/kg of body weight per day in 3-4 doses. The course of treatment is 5-10 days.

Therapeutic effect in treatment of diarrhea with furazolidone develops within 2-5 days of therapy. Sometimes patients may need a longer period of treatment. If a satisfactory clinical response is not obtained within 7 days, it means that the pathogen is refractory to the action of furazolidone, and the drug should be stopped. Additional therapy with other antibacterial agents or bismuth salts may be indicated.

The highest doses for adults: single dose – 200 mg, daily – 800 mg. It is not recommended to take Furazolidone for more than 10 days.

Interaction

The agents that alkalize the urine reduce the effect (accelerate excretion with the urine), those that acidify the urine increase it. Aminoglycosides and tetracycline increase antimicrobial properties.
Increases suppression of hematopoiesis against chloramphenicol and ristomycin.

Special Instructions

Limited for use in chronic renal failure, diseases of the nervous system. For prevention of neuritis with prolonged use it should be combined with B vitamins.

Furozolidone has the ability to sensitize the body to the effect of alcohol and can be used to treat chronic alcoholism if other drugs are not effective or if there are contraindications to their use.

It should be taken into account that Furazolidone is an MAO inhibitor; therefore, the same precautions should be observed when using it as when using classical MAO inhibitors.

Contraindications

Terminal stage of chronic renal failure, liver dysfunction, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, pregnancy, lactation, children under 8 years of age, hypersensitivity to the drug components and nitrofurans.

Do not prescribe for urinary tract infections.

Side effects

In some cases, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, allergic reactions (skin rash, hyperemia and itching of the skin, allergic edema) may occur.

It is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.
