100 mg nitrofurantoin

How to take, the dosage

Adults are prescribed orally 100-150 mg 3-4 times a day. The course of treatment is 5-8 days.

If there is no effect during this period it is not reasonable to continue treatment.

Maximum doses: single dose – 300 mg, daily – 600 mg.

In children Furadonin is usually prescribed at the rate of 5-8 mg/kg per day in 3-4 doses.

Interaction

Simultaneous use of nalidixic acid and antacids containing magnesium trisilicate reduces the antibacterial effect.
Incompatible with fluoroquinolones.

The drugs that block tubular secretion reduce the antibacterial effect (by reducing the concentration of nitrofurantoin in the urine) and increase the toxicity (increased concentration in the blood) of the drug.

Special Instructions

The risk of peripheral neuropathy increases in patients with anemia, diabetes mellitus, electrolyte imbalance, B-group vitamin deficiency, severe renal insufficiency.

The drug should not be prescribed for the treatment of cortical kidney disease, purulent paranephritis and prostatitis.

The drug should preferably be prescribed with food or milk to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal side effects.

Furadonin is not prescribed in combination with drugs that cause renal dysfunction.

When using Furadonin during lactation it is necessary to consider stopping breastfeeding.

Contraindications

Serious heart failure, hepatic and renal diseases hypersensitivity to the drug.

Side effects

Possible epigastric discomfort, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice;

cough, chest pain, dyspnea, pulmonary infiltrates, interstitial pneumonitis or fibrosis, shortness of breath, decreased measures of respiratory function;

peripheral neuropathy, headache, nystagmus, dizziness, drowsiness;

Leukopenia, eosinophilia, granulocytopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, megaloblastic anemia (changes are reversible);

superinfection of the urogenital tract, most often caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa;

urticaria, Quincke’s edema, skin itching, rash.

very rarely – anaphylactic shock, asthma attack (in patients with a history of asthma), drug fever, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, “flu-like” symptoms, arthralgia.
