Flexen is an NSAID, a derivative of propionic acid.
It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effects. Mechanism of action is related to inhibition of COX activity – main enzyme of arachidonic acid metabolism which is precursor of prostaglandins, that play main role in pathogenesis of inflammation, pain and fever.
The pronounced analgesic effect of ketoprofen is caused by two mechanisms: peripheral (indirectly, through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis) and central (due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in central and peripheral nervous system and also due to the effect on biological activity of other neurotropic substances which play key role in release of pain mediators in the spinal cord).
Ketoprofen also has anti-bradykinin activity, stabilizes lysosomal membranes, causes significant inhibition of neutrophil activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Suppresses platelet aggregation.
