Enterofuryl® is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial drug that has no systemic action and is used for treatment of diarrhea of infectious etiology. Enterofuryl® contains the active substance nifuroxazide, a drug of 5-nitrofuran derivatives group.
The drug has a bactericidal and bacteriostatic effect against most pathogens of acute intestinal infections. Antimicrobial action of nifuroxazide is dose-dependent: thus, low and medium doses of the drug have a bacteriostatic effect against pathogenic microflora, and high – bactericidal.
The bacteriostatic mechanism of action of the drug is associated with inhibition of dehydrogenase enzyme activity, which leads to disruption of the normal course of synthesis of vital compounds in the cell of the microorganism. Thus, due to the effect of nifuroxazide on a microorganism cell a disruption of the respiratory chain and inhibition of tricarboxylic acid cycle is observed.
Besides, Enterofuryl® inhibits protein synthesis in a microorganism cell and inhibits other biochemical processes in a bacterial cell. Thus, the microorganism cell loses its ability to reproduce.
Indications
Acute bacterial diarrhea, occurring without deterioration in general condition, increase in body temperature, or intoxication.
Pharmacological effect
Pharmacological action
Broad-spectrum antimicrobial drug, a derivative of 5-nitrofuran. Blocks the activity of dehydrogenases and inhibits the respiratory chain, the tricarboxylic acid cycle and a number of other biochemical processes in the microbial cell. Destroys the microbial cell membrane, reduces the production of toxins by microorganisms. Highly active against Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Clostridium perfringens, Vibrio cholerae, pathogenic Vibrions and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus spp. Weakly sensitive to nifuroxazide: Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Providencia indologenes. Resistant to nifuroxazide: Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Providencia spp., Pdeudomonas spp.
Does not disturb the balance of intestinal microflora.
In acute bacterial diarrhea, it restores intestinal eubiosis. When infected with enterotropic viruses, it prevents the development of bacterial superinfection.
Special instructions
When treating diarrhea, rehydration therapy must be carried out simultaneously with therapy with Enterofuril®. In case of bacterial diarrhea with signs of systemic damage, you should consult a doctor to decide on the use of systemic antibacterial drugs. If symptoms of hypersensitivity appear (shortness of breath, rash, itching), you should stop taking the drug. Drinking alcohol during therapy with nifuroxazide is prohibited.
Due to the content of methyl parahydroxybenzoate, the drug may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed).
One capsule of Enterofuril® 100 mg contains 36 mg of sucrose, which corresponds to 0.0030 XE. In a single dose of the drug (2 capsules), the sucrose content corresponds to 0.0060 XE. The daily dose of sucrose is 0.024 XE for adults and children from 6 to 18 years of age when taking 2 capsules of Enterofuril® 100 mg 4 times a day, and 0.018 XE for children when taking 2 capsules of Enterofuril® 100 mg 3 times a day.
Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and machinery
The drug does not affect psychomotor activity and the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
