Pharmacological properties

.Pharmacodynamics
Nifuroxazide is an antimicrobial agent, a nitrofuran derivative. It blocks the activity of dehydrogenases and inhibits respiratory chains, tricarboxylic acid cycle and a number of other biochemical processes in the microbial cell. It destroys microbial cell membrane and reduces production of toxins by microorganisms. Highly active against Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp, Shigella spp.; Clostridium perfringens, Vibrio cholerae, pathogenic Vibrions and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus spp.
Weakly sensitive to nifuroxazide: Citrobacter spp, Enterobacter cloacae and Proteus indologenes. Resistant to nifuroxazide: Klebsiella spp., Proteus mirabilis, Providencia spp., Pseudomonas spp. He disrupts the balance of intestinal microflora. In bacterial diarrhea restores intestinal eubiosis. In infection with enterotropic viruses prevent the development of bacterial superinfection.

Pharmacokinetics
After oral administration nifuroxazide is practically not absorbed from the digestive tract and its antibacterial effect is exclusively in the intestinal lumen. Nifuroxazide is excreted by the intestine: 20% unchanged and the rest chemically altered.

Indications

Acute bacterial diarrhea that does not worsen the general condition, increase body temperature, and intoxication.

How to take, the dosage

Children from 3 to 6 years: 200 mg (2 capsules of 100 mg or 1 capsule of 200 mg) 3 times a day (interval between doses of 8 hours). Children from 6 to 18 years: 200 mg (2 capsules of
100 mg or 1 capsule of 200 mg) 3-4 times a day (interval between doses of 6-8 hours).
Adults: 200 mg (2 capsules of 100 mg or 1 capsule of 200 mg) 4 times a day (interval between doses of 6 hours).
The course of treatment lasts 5-7 days, but not more than 7 days. If during the first three days there has been no improvement, you should consult a physician.
Only use the drug according to the method of administration and in the doses specified in the instructions. If necessary, please talk to your doctor before using the drug.

Interaction

It is not recommended to use simultaneously with drugs that cause disulfiram-like reactions, drugs that depress the function of the central nervous system. If you take other medicines (including over-the-counter ones), consult your doctor before starting Ecofuryl® administration.

Special Instructions

In the treatment of diarrhea, rehydration therapy should be carried out simultaneously with nifuroxazide therapy. In case of bacterial diarrhea with signs of systemic damage (deterioration of general condition, increased body temperature, symptoms of intoxication or infection) the doctor should be consulted to decide on the use of antibacterial drugs of systemic action. If symptoms of hypersensitivity occur (shortness of breath, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, skin rash, itching), the drug should be stopped immediately. Alcohol consumption during therapy with nifuroxazide is prohibited. The excipients include sucrose in the dosage of 24 mg for 100 mg capsule and 48 mg for
200 mg capsule. Thus, a single dose of sucrose when taking 100 and 200 mg capsules will be 24 mg and 48 mg, respectively. The daily dose of sucrose when taking the 100 mg and 200 mg capsules is 96 mg and 192 mg, respectively.

Influence on ability to drive vehicles, machinery
The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles, and machinery.

Synopsis

Solid gelatin capsules № 0 of yellow color (for dosage 100 mg).
The contents of the capsules is a mixture of powder and yellow pellets. Permitted specks of white color.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to nifuroxazide, to nitrofuran derivatives or any excipients of the drug.

Children under 3 years of age.

Pregnancy.

Congenital intolerance of fructose, galactose, galactosemia,
glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Side effects

Allergic reactions (skin rash, urticaria, Quincke’s edema, anaphylactic shock). If any of the side effects listed in the instructions worsen, or if you notice any other side effects not listed in the instructions, tell your doctor.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose are not known. Treatment is symptomatic.

Pregnancy use

No teratogenic effects have been identified in animal studies. However, as a precautionary measure, it is not recommended to take nifuroxazide during pregnancy. During the lactation period it is possible to continue breastfeeding in case of a short course of treatment with the drug. It is necessary to consult a physician.
