Dimexide is an anti-inflammatory agent with local analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. It has a moderate antiseptic and fibrinolytic effect.
Dimethylsulfoxide inhibits inflammatory tissue infiltration. In addition, dimethylsulfoxide promotes normalization of fibrin formation processes, increases microcirculation in tissues by inhibiting erythrocyte aggregation, increases phagocyte activity, inhibits neutrophil chemotaxis and decreases circulating immune complexes.
It penetrates through skin, mucous membranes, cell wall of bacteria (increases their sensitivity to antibiotics) and other biological membranes and increases their permeability to drugs. The drug is slightly toxic.
Pharmacokinetics
Dimethylsulfoxide is detected in blood serum after 8-15 minutes by application of the drug, the maximum content is noted after 2-8 hours. As a rule, after 30-36 hours dimethylsulfoxide is no longer detectable in the serum. Dimethylsulfoxide does not cumulate. When the drug is applied topically, dimethylsulfoxide penetrates into the joint cavity and binds to proteins in blood and tissues.
Dimethylsulfoxide is excreted unchanged from the body through the kidneys and as oxidation products – dimethylsulfone and dimethylsulfate; it is also excreted with exhaled air as a reduced product (dimethylsulfide).
