Dimexide is an anti-inflammatory agent with local analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. It has a moderate antiseptic and fibrinolytic effect.
Dimethylsulfoxide inhibits inflammatory tissue infiltration. In addition, dimethylsulfoxide promotes normalization of fibrin formation processes, increases microcirculation in tissues by inhibiting erythrocyte aggregation, increases phagocyte activity, inhibits neutrophil chemotaxis and decreases circulating immune complexes.
It penetrates through skin, mucous membranes, cell wall of bacteria (increases their sensitivity to antibiotics) and other biological membranes and increases their permeability to drugs. The drug is slightly toxic.
Pharmacokinetics
Dimethylsulfoxide is detected in blood serum after 8-15 minutes by application of the drug, the maximum content is noted after 2-8 hours. As a rule, after 30-36 hours dimethylsulfoxide is no longer detectable in the serum. Dimethylsulfoxide does not cumulate. When the drug is applied topically, dimethylsulfoxide penetrates into the joint cavity and binds to proteins in blood and tissues.
Dimethylsulfoxide is excreted unchanged from the body through the kidneys and as oxidation products – dimethylsulfone and dimethylsulfate; it is also excreted with exhaled air as a reduced product (dimethylsulfide).
Indications
To relieve pain during complex therapy of the following diseases and conditions:
rheumatoid arthritis;
Bekhterev’s disease;
deforming osteoarthritis;
arthropathy;
radiculitis;
trigeminal neuralgia;
treatment of bruises;
ligament damage;
traumatic infiltrates;
therapy for erythema nodosum.
Pharmacological effect
Dimexide is an anti-inflammatory agent with local analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. Has a moderate antiseptic and fibrinolytic effect.
Dimethyl sulfoxide inhibits inflammatory tissue infiltration. In addition, dimethyl sulfoxide helps normalize the processes of fibrin formation, increases microcirculation in tissues, inhibiting erythrocyte aggregation, increases the activity of phagocytes, suppresses neutrophil chemotaxis and reduces the content of circulating immune complexes.
Penetrates through the skin, mucous membranes, bacterial cell walls (increases their sensitivity to antibiotics) and other biological membranes, increasing their permeability to drugs. The drug is low toxic.
Pharmacokinetics
When the drug is applied, dimethyl sulfoxide is detected in the blood serum after 8–15 minutes, with the maximum content observed after 2–8 hours. As a rule, after 30–36 hours, dimethyl sulfoxide is no longer detected in the blood serum. Dimethyl sulfoxide does not accumulate. When applied topically, dimethyl sulfoxide penetrates the joint cavity and binds to proteins in the blood and tissues.
Excreted from the body through the kidneys unchanged and in the form of oxidation products – dimethyl sulfone and dimethyl sulfate; and also in the form of a reduced product (dimethyl sulfide) is released in exhaled air.
Special instructions
Considering the possibility of individual intolerance to the drug, it is recommended to conduct a drug test to determine tolerance to it. To do this, apply a thin layer of gel to the skin of the elbow. The appearance of severe redness and itching indicates increased sensitivity to Dimexide.
If allergic reactions occur during treatment with the drug, the use of the drug is stopped and H1-histamine receptor blockers are prescribed.
Active ingredient
Dimethyl sulfoxide
Composition
Per 100 ml:
Active substance:
Dimexide (dimethyl sulfoxide) – 100 ml.
Pregnancy
The use of the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding is contraindicated.
Contraindications
hypersensitivity to Dimexide or other components of the drug;
severe damage to the liver and kidneys;
angina pectoris;
myocardial infarction;
severe atherosclerosis;
various types of stroke;
glaucoma, cataract;
coma;
pregnancy;
lactation period;
children’s age up to 12 years.
With caution: due to the fact that Dimexide can enhance not only the activity, but also the toxicity of some drugs, caution should be exercised when prescribing it simultaneously with other drugs.
Side Effects
During the use of the drug, contact dermatitis, a garlicky odor of exhaled air, increased skin pigmentation, allergic reactions, erythematous rashes, dry skin, and a slight burning sensation may be observed.
Some patients do not perceive the smell of the drug well (nausea, vomiting); in isolated cases, bronchospasm is possible.
If any of the side effects indicated in the instructions worsen or any other side effects not specified in the instructions appear, you must inform your doctor.
Interaction
Enhances the penetration of drugs (NSAIDs, antibiotics, etc.) through the skin, which leads to an increase in their activity, and in some combinations – to toxicity.
Overdose
Symptoms: increased dose-dependent side effects.
Treatment: in these cases, the drug should be discontinued, the damaged area should be washed, and the drug should be removed.
