Pharmacodynamics
Antihistamine, anti-allergic and antipruritic agent. Blocker of H1-histamine receptors, is a competitive histamine antagonist.
The drug reduces increased capillary permeability associated with allergic reactions. When applied to the skin the drug reduces itching and irritation caused by skin allergic reactions. It also has a strong local anesthetic effect.
It has also antikinin and weak anticholinergic effect.
When used externally the gel base allows for a quick onset of action (in a few minutes) and a mild cooling effect. Maximal effect occurs after 1-4 hours.
Pharmacokinetics
When used externally it penetrates into the skin well, systemic bioavailability is 10%.
Indications
- Skin itching of various origins (other than cholestasis-related), such as: itchy dermatosis, eczema, urticaria, insect bites.
- Sunburn, domestic and industrial burns (mild).

How to take, the dosage
Externally. The gel is applied to the affected skin area 2-4 times a day. In cases of severe itching or widespread skin lesions simultaneous use of oral forms of dimethindene is recommended.
Interaction
There are no known drug interactions for the drug.
Special Instructions
In children from 1 month to 2 years of age, the drug should be used after consulting a doctor. In infants and young children the drug should not be used on large areas of skin, especially if there is inflammation or bleeding.
In severe itching or in case of large areas of skin, the drug should only be used after consulting a physician. Exposure to sunlight should be avoided if the drug is used on large areas of skin.
If symptoms do not decrease or increase while using the drug, you should see your doctor.
It is ineffective in itching associated with cholestasis.
The drug contains propylene glycol and benzalkonium chloride, which may cause local allergic reactions.
The effect of the drug on the ability to drive vehicles, machinery
No effect.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to dimethindene and other constituents of the drug, closed-angle glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, children under 1 month of age, especially premature infants.
With caution
Pregnancy I trimester, period of breast-feeding.
Side effects
The frequency of adverse reactions that may occur during therapy is given as the following gradation: very common (≥1/10); common (≥1/100 to < 1/10); infrequent (≥1/1000 to < 1/100); rare (≥1/10000 to < 1/1000); very rare (< 1/10000), including individual reports and reactions with unknown frequency (cannot be calculated based on available data).
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders:
Infrequent: dry, burning skin.
Very rare: allergic dermatitis, including skin rash, itching.
If any of the side effects specified in the instructions are aggravated or you notice any other side effects not specified in the instructions, inform the treating physician.
Overdose
If a large amount of the drug is accidentally swallowed, symptoms characteristic of overdose of H1-histamine receptor blocker drugs may occur, including depression of central nervous system (CNS) functions, Drowsiness (mainly in adults), CNS stimulation, antimuscarinic effects (especially in children), including hyperexcitability, ataxia, hallucinations, tonic-clonic seizures, mydriasis, dry mouth, blood “rushes” to the face, urinary retention and fever. This may be followed by a drop in blood pressure.
Treatment:
A specific antidote is not known. The usual emergency measures should be taken: if ingested – administration of activated charcoal, saline laxatives; if necessary, carry out measures to maintain the functions of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. For treatment of arterial hypotension vasoconstrictors may be used.
Do not exceed the recommended dose of the drug.
In case of accidental overdose, immediately inform the doctor.
Pregnancy use
Before using the drug Dimethinden if you are pregnant or if you assume that you may be pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, you should consult your doctor.
Use of the drug in the first trimester of pregnancy is possible only after consultation with the doctor. It is not recommended to apply the drug in the second and third trimesters and during breast-feeding period on large skin areas, especially if there are inflammations or bleeding. Nursing mothers should not apply the drug on the nipples of mammary glands.
