Diameride acts mainly by stimulating the secretion and release of insulin from the beta cells of the pancreas (pancreatic action). As with other sulfonylurea derivatives, this effect is based on increasing the response of pancreatic beta cells to physiological glucose stimulation, while the amount of insulin secreted is significantly lower than that of traditional drugs – sulfonylurea derivatives.
Indications
Diabetes mellitus type 2 with ineffectiveness of previously prescribed diet and exercise.
Active ingredient
Glimepiride
Composition
1 tablet contains:
the active substance:
glimepiride in terms of 100% substance – 1 mg.

lactose monohydrate,
povidone,
poloxamer,
croscarmellose sodium,
Microcrystalline cellulose,
Magnesium stearate,
Red iron oxide dye.
How to take, the dosage
Diameride is administered orally. Initial and maintenance doses of glimepiride are established individually, based on the results of regular monitoring of blood glucose concentration. Initial dose and dose selection
Interaction
Concomitant use of glimepiride with some drugs may cause both strengthening and weakening of the hypoglycemic effect of the drug. Therefore, other drugs may be taken only after agreement with the doctor.
Special Instructions
Diameride should be taken in the recommended doses and at the prescribed times. Mistakes in the use of the drug, such as skipping a dose, should never be corrected by taking a higher dose at a later date. The physician and the patient must agree in advance on the measures to be taken in case of such errors (e.g. skipping a dose or eating) or in situations where the next dose cannot be taken at the prescribed time.
Contraindications
- Diabetes mellitus type 1;
- diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic precoma and coma;
- situations accompanied by impaired food absorption and development of hypoglycemia (including infectious diseases);
- leukopenia;
- severe hepatic dysfunction;
- severe renal dysfunction (including patients on hemodialysis);
- high sensitivity to glimepiride or to any inactive component of the drug, to other sulfonylurea derivatives or to sulfonamides (risk of hypersensitivity reactions);
- pregnancy and lactation
- lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption
- children under 18 years of age.
With caution
Patients with conditions requiring transfer to insulin therapy (extensive burns, severe multiple trauma, major surgery, and gastrointestinal absorption disorders of food and medications – intestinal obstruction, gastric paresis, etc.).
Side effects
Metabolic reactions: hypoglycemic reactions may develop. These reactions mainly occur shortly after taking the drug, may have a severe form and course, and they cannot always be easily controlled. The onset of these symptoms depends on individual factors, such as diet and dosing.
Overdose
After an oral large dose of glimepiride, hypoglycemia may develop, lasting from 12 to 72 hours, which may recur after the initial recovery of blood glucose concentration. In most cases, observation in a hospital setting is recommended.
