Pharmacological action:

Corvalol is a combined preparation, the action of which is due to the properties of its constituent substances. It has sedative and antispasmodic effect. It facilitates the onset of natural sleep.

. Ethyl ester of alpha-bromisovaleric acid has sedative (similar to the effect of valerian) and antispasmodic action, which is caused mainly by irritation of the receptors in the mouth and nasopharynx, Decrease of reflex excitability in central parts of nervous system and increased inhibition in neurons of cerebral cortex and subcortical structures, as well as decreased activity of central vasomotor centers and direct local antispasmodic action on smooth muscles.

Phenobarbital increases the sedative effect of the other components, reduces CNS agitation and facilitates sleep.
Peppermint oil has a reflex vasodilatory, antispasmodic, mild choleretic, antiseptic action.

The mechanism of action is associated with the ability to irritate the “cold” receptors of the mucous membrane of the mouth, and reflexively dilate the heart and brain vessels. It eliminates the phenomena of flatulence due to irritation of the mucous membrane receptors of the gastrointestinal tract, increasing the intestinal peristalsis.

Indications

Corvalol is prescribed as a symptomatic (sedative and vasodilator) agent in functional disorders of the cardiovascular system, neurosis-like states accompanied by increased irritability, in violation of falling asleep, tachycardia, states of agitation with marked autonomic manifestations;
as an antispasmodic agent – in intestinal spasms.

Active ingredient

Composition

1 tablet:
– peppermint oil 580 mcg
– phenobarbital 7.5 mg
– ethyl ester of α-bromisovaleric acid 8.2 mg

Associates:

beta-cyclodextrin 55.55 mg,

Potato starch 13 mg,

Lactose monohydrate 43.77 mg,

p Microcrystalline cellulose 10.5 mg,

magnesium stearate 0.9 mg.

How to take, the dosage

The dose is set individually.

Take orally, before meals, with water. Adults are usually prescribed 1-2 tablets of Corvalol 2 times a day. In tachycardia single dose may be increased to 3 tablets. The maximum daily dose is 6 tablets of Corvalol.

The duration of use of the drug is determined by the doctor individually.

Interaction

Drugs depressing CNS increase the effect of the drug Corvalol.

Phenobarbital (microsomal oxidation inducer) may decrease the effectiveness of drugs metabolized in the liver (including coumarin derivatives, griseofulvin, glucocorticosteroids, oral contraceptives); it increases the effect of local anesthetic, analgesic and hypnotic drugs. The drug increases the toxicity of methotrexate.

The action of the drug increases with the use of valproic acid.

Special Instructions

There is no experience of using the drug in children under 18 years of age.

Do not drink alcohol during the use of the drug Corvalol.

It is recommended to refrain from potentially hazardous activities requiring increased concentration and quick psychomotor reactions (including driving and operating complex machinery).

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug Corvalol;
expressed renal and/or hepatic impairment,
lactation period (if you need to use during breast-feeding you should consider stopping breast-feeding), pregnancy,
age under 18 years (efficacy and safety is not established),
lactase deficiency, lactose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption (the drug contains lactose).

Side effects

Sleepiness, dizziness, slow heart rate, decreased ability to concentrate, allergic reactions. Gastrointestinal disorders may occur. The above phenomena disappear with reduction of the dose of Corvalol or discontinuation of the drug.

In prolonged use of the drug it is possible to develop drug addiction, addiction, withdrawal syndrome, as well as bromine accumulation in the body and development of bromism.

Overdose

Symptoms: CNS depression, nystagmus, ataxia, decreased blood pressure, agitation, dizziness, weakness, chronic bromine intoxication (depression, apathy, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, hemorrhagic diathesis, movement coordination disorders).

Treatment: discontinuation of the drug, gastric lavage and symptomatic therapy, with CNS depression – caffeine, nikethamide.
