Ceftriaxone is a third-generation broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic. It acts bactericidally by inhibiting cell membrane synthesis of microorganisms. In vitro suppresses growth of most gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Resistant against b-lactamases.

Indications

Infectious and inflammatory diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to ceftriaxone, incl. peritonitis, sepsis, meningitis, cholangitis, gallbladder empyema, shigellosis, salmonella carriage, pneumonia, lung abscess, pleural empyema, pyelonephritis, infections of bones, joints, skin and soft tissues, genitals, infected wounds and burns.

Prevention of postoperative infection.

Pharmacological effect

Special instructions

The drug is prescribed with caution to newborns (including premature infants) due to the high risk of developing hyperbilirubinemia in ulcerative colitis.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone; pregnancy (first trimester).

Side Effects

Allergic reactions: about 1% – urticaria, fever, chills, eosinophilia, rash, itching, exanthema, allergic dermatitis, exudative erythema multiforme, edema, anaphylactic shock.
From the digestive system: nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, glossitis, diarrhea, pseudomembranous enterocolitis, cholestasis, increased activity of liver transaminases, hyperazotemia, hypercreatininemia, increased urea content.
From the side of the central nervous system: headache, dizziness.
From the hematopoietic system: leukopenia, neutropenia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia.
Local reactions: with intravenous injection – phlebitis, pain along the vein, with intramuscular injection – pain at the injection site.
Other: superinfection (including candidomycosis, mycosis of the genital organs); oliguria, hypocoagulation.

Interaction

Ceftriaxone and aminoglycosides are synergistic against many gram-negative bacteria.

Overdose

Treatment: symptomatic. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective.
