Pharmacodynamics

Ascorbic acid is involved in the regulation of redox processes, carbohydrate metabolism, blood coagulation, tissue regeneration, helps to increase the body’s resistance.

Rutoside (a derivative of rutin) eliminates the increased permeability of capillaries, strengthens the vascular wall, reducing swelling and inflammation. It has an angioaggregant effect that helps to improve microcirculation.

Intake

It is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), mainly in the jejunum. With increasing dose up to 200 mg it is absorbed up to 140 mg (70%), with further increasing dose absorption decreases (50-20%). Binding to plasma proteins is 25%. Gastrointestinal diseases (gastric and 12 duodenal ulcer, constipation or diarrhea, helminth infestation, giardiasis), consumption of fresh fruit and vegetable juices and alkaline drinking reduce absorption of ascorbate in intestine.

Distribution

The plasma concentration of ascorbic acid in normal is approximately 10-20 mcg/mL, the body stores about 1.5 g when taking the daily recommended doses and 2.5 g when taking 200 mg/day. The TSmax (half-life) after oral administration is 4 hours.

It penetrates readily into leukocytes, platelets, and then into all tissues; the highest concentration is reached in glandular organs, leukocytes, liver, and the lens of the eye; Deposited in posterior pituitary lobe, adrenal cortex, ocular epithelium, interstitial cells of seminal glands, ovaries, liver, spleen, pancreas, lungs, kidneys, intestinal wall, heart, muscles, thyroid gland; penetrates through placenta. The concentration of ascorbic acid in white blood cells and platelets is higher than in red blood cells and plasma. In deficiency states, the concentration in leukocytes decreases later and more slowly and is considered a better criterion for assessing deficiency than the concentration in plasma.

Metabolism

Metabolized primarily in the liver to deoxyascorbic acid and then to oxalic acetic acid and diketogulonic acid.

Extracted by kidneys, intestines, sweat, breast milk as unchanged ascorbate and metabolites.
In high doses the excretion rate increases sharply. Smoking and use of ethanol accelerate the destruction of ascorbic acid (conversion to inactive metabolites), dramatically reducing the body’s reserves. It is excreted by hemodialysis.

Rutoside

The time of maximum concentration in blood plasma after oral administration is 1-9 hours. It is excreted mainly with the bile and to a lesser extent by the kidneys. Half-life period is 10-25 hours.

Patients with diabetes need to keep in mind that one tablet of the drug contains about 0.2 g of carbohydrates (0.017 IU).

When using the drug alone, it is recommended not to exceed the maximum time and recommended doses.

Due to its antioxidant properties, rutin protects cells from the damaging effects of free radicals, inhibiting aging processes in cells and protects ascorbic acid from excess oxidation, preserving its biological activity. Rutin is one of the most effective venotonics. Its action is aimed at increasing the tone of the smooth muscle of the vascular walls, maintaining their elasticity and normalization of blood flow to the altered areas. By reducing the permeability of the vascular walls, rutin helps to reduce swelling and prevents its recurrence.

The human body is not capable of producing its own ascorbic acid and rutin, so its normal functioning requires daily intake of vitamins with food or in the form of special supplements.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Because of the rutin content of the drug it should not be used in the first trimester of pregnancy.
