Betadine is an antiseptic and disinfectant. Releasing from the complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone in contact with skin and mucous membranes, iodine forms iodamines with bacterial cell proteins, coagulates them and causes death of microorganisms. It has a bactericidal effect on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (except Mycobacterium tuberculosis).
It is active against bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa.
Indications
– Treatment of patient’s skin before and after surgical interventions (including injections, punctures, biopsies, blood sampling).
– treatment of wounds, burns, trophic ulcers, bedsores, superinfective dermatitis;
– hygienic treatment of patients.
Active ingredient
Composition
1 ml of solution contains 100 mg of povidone iodine;
auxiliary substances:
Glycerin,
Nonoxynol 9,
Citric acid anhydrous,
p>dihydrophosphate disodium,
10% sodium hydroxide solution (m/o) for pH setting,
purified water
How to take, the dosage
Betadine solution can be used undiluted or as an aqueous solution in a dilution of 1:10 or 1:100.
For skin disinfection in healthy areas the solution is used undiluted with exposure for 1-2 minutes.
When treating wounds, burns, bacterial and fungal skin lesions, Betadine aqueous solution is used in a dilution of 1:10.
For hygienic treatment of the patient uses Betadine aqueous solution at a dilution of 1:100.
Interaction
Betadine is incompatible with other disinfectants and antiseptics, especially those containing alkalis, enzymes and mercury.
Special Instructions
The Betadine solution must be diluted immediately before use. The diluted solution must not be stored!
The solution should have a dark brown color. Discoloration of the solution indicates destruction of the polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine complex and a decrease in the effectiveness of the drug.
Light and temperature above 40°C accelerate disintegration of the active substance of the drug.
If the thyroid function is impaired, the drug should be used only under the supervision of a doctor.
The staining on skin and tissues is easily washed off with water. Contact with the drug should be avoided in the eyes after contact.
Contraindications
– Hyperthyroidism;
– thyroid adenoma;
– Duhring’s dermatitis herpetiformis;
– simultaneous use of radioactive iodine;
– children under 8 years of age;
– hypersensitivity to iodine and other components of the drug.
With caution when using the drug during pregnancy and lactation (breast-feeding).
Side effects
Possible: local manifestation of an allergic reaction to iodine (itching, hyperemia), which requires withdrawal of the drug.
Overdose
There are no data on an overdose of Betadine.
Pregnancy use
Betadine is not recommended for use from the 3rd month of pregnancy and during lactation.
If therapy is necessary, the doctor decides on the prescription of the drug individually.
Thyroid function should be monitored in newborns and infants whose mothers used Betadine.
