Pharmacological properties:
Belladonna is a wild plant with oval leaves, distributed in central and Mediterranean parts of Europe.
Chemical composition – mainly alkaloids with parasympathicolytic action: atropine, which is formed by racemization of hyoscyamine, the main alkaloid present in the fresh plant, its action is predominant in all toxicology and in all pathogenesis;
scopolamine or hyoscine.
Belladonna has anticholinergic effects due to its competitive antagonism with acetylcholine (especially on the muscarinic-like effects of acetylcholine). It also affects the peripheral (weakening of smooth muscles) and central nervous system.
