ATX: S.01.F.B.01 Phenylephrine
Drug for symptomatic local treatment of rhinitis. Phenylephrine hydrochloride is an alpha1-adrenergic receptor agonist (sympathomimetic) which has a vasoconstrictor effect due to stimulation of alpha1-receptors in the nasal mucosa, reduces mucosa swelling and tissue hyperemia, congestion in the nasal mucosa, and improves nasal airway patency.
The restoration of nasopharyngeal airway patency improves the patient’s well-being and reduces the risk of possible complications caused by mucociliary congestion.
Systemic absorption is low when used topically.

How to take, the dosage
Intranasally.
1 dose contains 0.125 mg of phenylephrine hydrochloride.
For children aged 4 to 6 years, 1-2 doses in each nasal passage, not more often than every 6 hours; 6 to 12 years, 2-3 doses in each nasal passage, not more often than every 4 hours.
The duration of treatment without consulting a doctor is not more than 3-5 days.
Please only use the product according to the indication, route of administration, and dosage listed in the directions.
Interaction
Thyroid hormones with systemic absorption of phenylephrine increase (reciprocally) the associated risk of coronary artery disease (especially in coronary atherosclerosis).
Special Instructions
In children the systemic absorption of phenylephrine and the associated risk of side effects is higher than in adults.
The duration of use of the drug should not exceed 3 days; if nasal breathing difficulties persist, further use of the drug should be coordinated with the physician.
Phenylephrine should not be administered to patients within 2 weeks of withdrawal of MAOI inhibitors because it may increase the adrenergic effects of sympathomimetic agents and increase the risk of cardiovascular side effects.
To avoid allowing more than one person to use the same vial, there is a risk of spreading infection.
There are no data on adverse effects of the drug on the ability to drive a car and other vehicles. However, in case of manifestation of symptoms of side effects of the drug, one should refrain from driving vehicles and performing activities requiring concentration and quick psychomotor reactions.
Contraindications
High individual sensitivity to the drug components; cardiovascular diseases (including significant atherosclerosis, angina pectoris, tachycardia), thyroid disease (thyrotoxicosis), diabetes, arterial hypertension, simultaneous use of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (and 2 weeks after their withdrawal), children under 4 years old.
Children under 6 years of age; pheochromocytoma; with hypersensitivity to adrenergic agents, accompanied by sleep disturbances, dizziness, skeletal muscle tremors, arrhythmias, increased blood pressure.
Side effects
Local reactions: a burning, tingling or tingling sensation in the nose, irritation of the nasal mucous membranes.
Systemic effects: headache, dizziness, palpitations, arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, sweating, pallor, tremor, sleep disturbances. Benzalkonium chloride contained in the drug may cause irritation of the nasal mucosa.
Overdose
It may manifest as heart rhythm disturbances, increased blood pressure, agitation. In case of overdose a doctor should be consulted.
The treatment is symptomatic.
