Acyclovir is active against Herpes simplex types 1 and 2, Varicella zoster virus, Epstein Barr virus and cytomegaloviruses. Thymidine kinase of virus-infected cells converts acyclovir into acyclovir mono-, di- and triphosphate through a series of activation reactions.

Symptoms (in case of accidental ingestion): headache, neurological disorders, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, impaired renal function, lethargy, seizures, coma.
Treatment: maintenance of vital functions, hemodialysis.
Pregnancy use
Adequate and controlled clinical safety studies of the drug during pregnancy have not been conducted. Use is indicated only when the estimated benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.
Breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment.
