Mucolytic remedy. Liquefies sputum, increases its volume, facilitates secretion, promotes expectoration.
The action of acetylcysteine is associated with the ability of its sulfhydryl groups to break disulfide bonds of acidic mucopolysaccharides of sputum, which leads to depolarization of mucoproteins and reduction of mucus viscosity. It retains activity in the presence of purulent sputum.
It has antioxidant effect due to the presence of SH-group, which is able to interact and neutralize electrophilic oxidizing toxins.
Acetylcysteine promotes synthesis of glutathione which is an important antioxidant factor of intracellular protection and provides maintenance of functional activity and morphological integrity of the cell.
Indications
Respiratory diseases and conditions accompanied by formation of viscous and mucopurulent phlegm: Acute and chronic bronchitis, tracheitis due to bacterial and/or viral infection, pneumonia, bronchiectatic disease, bronchial asthma, atelectasis due to blockage of the bronchi by mucous plugs, sinusitis (to facilitate the discharge of secretions), cystic fibrosis (in the combined therapy).
Removal of viscous secretions from the airways in post-traumatic and post-operative states.
Paracetamol overdose.
