Novocaine has a wide range of therapeutic action. When absorbed and directly injected into the bloodstream it has a general effect on the body, reduces acetylcholine formation and excitability of peripheral cholinoreactive systems, has a blocking effect on autonomic ganglia, reduces smooth muscle spasms, reduces excitability of the heart muscle and excitability of motor areas of the cerebral cortex. Novocaine is hydrolyzed in the body to form para-aminobenzoic acid and diethylaminoethanol, which are pharmacologically active substances. Para-aminobenzoic acid is a component of folic acid molecule, has antihistamine action, participates in detoxification processes, has antisulfanilamide action. Diethylaminoethanol has a moderate vasodilator effect. Resorbed novocaine, affecting interoreceptors, causes restructuring of vegetative innervation and thus has a long-term therapeutic effect in hypertension, a number of pulmonary and other diseases. Anesthetic property of novocaine is manifested quickly and its effect is short-term.

How to take, the dosage
Novocaine is used for infiltration anesthesia in the form of 0.25-0.5% solutions injected in the amount of 30 to 300 ml, and in some cases – several liters; for anesthesia by the Vishnevsky method (taut creeping infiltration) – 0.125-0.25%; spinal anesthesia – 1-2%. For novocaine blockade of the cranial nerves and border sympathetic trunks (by Mosin) 0.5% novocaine solution is used. The solution is injected at the point of intersection of the anterior edge of the last rib with the lateral edge of the longest muscle up to the stop in the body of the penultimate thoracic vertebra. Cattle and horses are injected 0.5 ml per 1 kg of weight; pigs, sheep, goats and dogs – 15-20 ml per animal; foxes, rabbits and cats – 3-5 ml per animal per side. For short novocaine blockade of udder nerves (according to Logvinov) 150-200 ml of 0.5% novocaine solution is injected into supramental space of affected quarters. For blockade of the external pudendal nerve (according to Bashkirov) 80-100 ml of 0.5% novocaine solution is injected into the loose tissue between the large and small lumbar muscles of the respective side. For paranephral block (according to Vishnevsky) novocaine is injected into the perinephric cage in the form of 0.25-0.5% solutions. Novocaine solutions are used intravenously, subcutaneously and internally (0.25-0.5%), intramuscularly (1-2%), in the aorta (1%). Concentration and dose depend on weight, age of animal, course of disease, type of anesthesia and nature of surgical intervention. Maximum single dose of novocaine per head: 2.5 g in horses, 2 g in cattle, 0.5 g in dogs or (in ml per animal):
