Anthelminthic agent of broad spectrum action; it is most effective for enterobiasis.

Causes irreversible disruption of glucose utilization in the helminth organism and inhibits ATP synthesis.

Indications

Enterobiasis, ascariasis, ankylostomidosis, strongyloidosis, trichocephaliasis, trichinellosis, teniasis, echinococcosis, alveococcosis, capillariasis, gnathostomosis, mixed helminth infections.

How to take, the dosage

Adults and children over 10 years of age in case of enterobiasis – in a dose of 100 mg once.

In children aged 2 to 10 years old – in a dose of 25-50 mg once.

In case of high probability of recurrent infestation the dose is repeated in 2-4 weeks.

The simultaneous treatment of all family members is recommended.

In case of ascariasis, trichocephaliasis, ankylostomiasis, teniasis, strongyloidiasis and mixed helminthiasis – 100 mg in the morning and in the evening for 3 days.

In trichinellosis – 200-400 mg 3 times a day for 3 days, and from the 4th to 10th day – 400-500 mg 3 times a day.

In case of echinococcosis – 500 mg 2 times a day for the first 3 days, then in the same dose 3 times a day for the next 3 days.

Thereafter the dose is 25-30 mg/kg/day in 3 to 4 doses.

Interaction

Mebendazole reduces the need for insulin in diabetic patients.

Combined administration of mebendazole with lipophilic substances should be avoided.

Concomitant use of cimetidine may increase and carbamazepine and other metabolic inducers may decrease the blood concentration of mebendazole.

Special Instructions

In long-term use it is necessary to monitor the peripheral blood count, liver and kidney function.

Do not drink alcohol during the day after taking mebendazole.

Do not use laxatives after taking mebendazole.

The periodic examination of anal and fecal smears after the end of treatment is mandatory (therapy is considered effective if there are no helminths or their eggs for the next 7 days).

Contraindications

Expressed liver function abnormalities, pregnancy, lactation (breastfeeding), children under 2 years of age, hypersensitivity to mebendazole.

Side effects

The digestive system: rarely – nausea, abdominal pain; when used in high doses for a long time, vomiting, diarrhea, transient increase in liver serum transaminase activity are possible.

CNS disorders: dizziness is rare; headache if used in high doses for a long time.

Hematopoietic system disorders: leukopenia, anemia, eosinophilia are possible with long-term use in high doses.

Urinary system disorders: in case of long-term use in high doses – hematuria, cylinduria.

Others: allergic reactions, hair loss when used in high doses for a long time.
