Sodium thiosulfate has a detoxifying effect.
In poisoning with compounds of arsenic, mercury, lead it forms nonpoisonous sulfites.
In poisoning with hydrocyanic acid and its salts (cyanides) it forms less poisonous rhodanide compounds.
Indications
poisoning with compounds of arsenic, mercury, lead;
hydrocyanic acid and its salts;
iodine and bromine salts.
Pharmacological effect
Sodium thiosulfate has a detoxifying effect.
In case of poisoning with compounds of arsenic, mercury, and lead, it forms non-toxic sulfites.
In case of poisoning with hydrocyanic acid and its salts (cyanides), it forms less toxic thiocyanate compounds.
Special instructions
In case of cyanide intoxication, delay in administering the antidote should be avoided (quick death is possible).
The patient should be closely monitored for 24-48 hours due to the possibility of recurrence of symptoms of cyanide poisoning.
If symptoms recur, administration of Sodium Thiosulfate should be repeated at half the dose.
