Isotonic sodium chloride solution replenishes sodium deficiency in various pathological conditions of the body and temporarily increases the volume of fluid circulating in the blood vessels.

Indications

Isotonic sodium chloride solution is used for dissolution of medications as well as in case of large losses of extracellular fluid or its insufficient intake (toxic dispersion, cholera, diarrhea, uncontrollable vomiting, extensive burns with severe exudation, etc.).It is also used for lavage of wounds, eyes, nasal mucosa, for regional perfusion together with fibrinolysin, heparin, antineoplastic and other medicines.

Aqueous (0.9%) sodium chloride solution,

isotonic to plasma.

How to take, the dosage

Isotonic sodium chloride solution is administered under the skin, into a vein and rectally in amounts from 5 to 3,000 ml per day depending on fluid loss, sodium ions and chlorine.

It is usually administered by drip method.

If prolonged administration of large doses of isotonic sodium chloride solution, it is desirable to monitor the electrolyte content in plasma and urine.

Contraindications

Sodium chloride isotonic solution should not be administered in disorders of the water-sodium balance associated with hypernatriemia, in extracellular hyperhydration, intracellular dehydration, circulatory disorders that threaten brain and lung edema, treatment with massive doses of corticosteroids.

Higher volumes of isotonic sodium chloride solution should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal excretory function.

Side effects

The administration of large volumes of isotonic sodium chloride solution can lead to chloride acidosis and hyperhydration, as well as increased potassium loss.
