Pharmaceutical group: A drug with antiproliferative and antibacterial action for the treatment of acne, hyperpigmentation and rosacea.
Pharmic action:Skinoren is a drug for the treatment of acne.
Azelaic acid normalizes the disturbed processes of keratinization in the follicles of sebaceous glands, reduces the content of free fatty acids in the skin lipids and reduces its oiliness.
It has antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Its anti-inflammatory effect is also due to a decrease in neutrophil metabolism and the production of free-radical oxygen forms. Azelaic acid has a dose- and time-dependent suppressive effect on the growth and viability of abnormal melanocytes.
Pharmacokinetics:
Assimilation
After application to the skin, azelaic acid is virtually not absorbed into the systemic bloodstream (no more than 3.6% in a single application of 5 g of gel or cream).
Exhaustion
Part of the absorbed azelaic acid is excreted unchanged by the kidneys, and part as dicarboxylic acids (C7, C5), formed from azelaic acid due to beta-oxidation.
Indications
– acne (acne vulgaris);
– rosacea.
Active ingredient
Composition
1 g of the gel contains azelaic acid (micronized) – 150 mg;
excipients:
lecithin,
triglycerides,
polysorbate 80,
propylene glycol,
polyacrylic acid,
How to take, the dosage
The gel should be applied to the previously thoroughly washed (water or cleansed with a mild cleanser) and dried skin. The gel is applied by thin layer on the affected skin surface twice a day (in the morning and in the evening) and lightly rubbed in. About 2.5 cm of gel is enough for the entire surface of the face.
In patients with acne vulgaris a significant improvement is usually observed after 4 weeks. For best results the product must be continued for several months.
Special Instructions
Avoid getting the drug in the eyes and on the mucous membranes of the nose, lips and mouth.
In cases of severe skin irritation during the first weeks of treatment, Skinoren may be used once daily; short-term withdrawal of the drug is also possible. Once the symptoms of skin irritation have disappeared, regular use of the product at the recommended dose should be resumed.
Skinoren may be used in combination with other acne therapy methods. In this case, it is possible to correct the dosage regimen of simultaneously used drugs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Side effects
Local reactions: rare (mostly at the beginning of therapy) – skin irritation, erythema, burning sensation, itching, peeling, which go away on their own during further treatment.
In very rare cases when using the gel skin allergic reactions (rash), contact dermatitis, folliculitis are possible.
Pregnancy use
Given the low systemic bioavailability and low toxicity of azelaic acid it is possible to use the drug during lactation (breastfeeding), as the amount of azelaic acid that may get to the baby with the breast milk is negligible and does not involve any danger.
In experimental studies on laboratory animals no possible risk of using the drug in pregnancy was found.
