Pharmaceutical group: A drug with antiproliferative and antibacterial action for the treatment of acne, hyperpigmentation and rosacea.
Pharmic action:Skinoren is a drug for the treatment of acne.
Azelaic acid normalizes the disturbed processes of keratinization in the follicles of sebaceous glands, reduces the content of free fatty acids in the skin lipids and reduces its oiliness.
It has antimicrobial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Its anti-inflammatory effect is also due to a decrease in neutrophil metabolism and the production of free-radical oxygen forms. Azelaic acid has a dose- and time-dependent suppressive effect on the growth and viability of abnormal melanocytes.
Pharmacokinetics: Absorption
Azelaic acid is practically not absorbed into the systemic bloodstream after application on the skin (not more than 3.6% in a single application of 5 g of gel or cream).
Excretion
Part of the absorbed azelaic acid is excreted unchanged by the kidneys, and part of it as dicarboxylic acids (C7, C5), formed from azelaic acid due to beta-oxidation.
Indications
– acne (acne vulgaris);
– rosacea.
Active ingredient
Composition
1 g of the gel contains azelaic acid (micronized) – 150 mg;
excipients:
lecithin,
triglycerides,
polysorbate 80,
propylene glycol,
polyacrylic acid,
sodium hydroxide,
dinatrium edetate,
purified water,

How to take, the dosage
The dosage regimen and duration of therapy are set individually.
The gel should be applied to thoroughly washed (with water or mild cleanser) and dried skin. The gel is applied thinly to the affected area of the skin twice a day (morning and evening) and rubbed in gently.
About 2.5 cm of the gel is enough for the whole surface of the face.
Patients with common acne (acne vulgaris) usually show a marked improvement after 4 weeks.
The product must be continued for several months to achieve the best results.
Special Instructions
Avoid getting the drug in the eyes and on the mucous membranes of the nose, lips and mouth.
In cases of severe skin irritation in the first weeks of treatment, Skinoren can be used once a day; short-term withdrawal of the drug is also possible. Once the symptoms of skin irritation have disappeared, regular use of the drug at the recommended dose should be resumed.
Skinoren may be used in combination with other acne therapy methods. In this case, it is possible to correct the dosage regimen of simultaneously used drugs.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Side effects
Local reactions: rarely (mainly at the beginning of therapy) – skin irritation, erythema, burning sensation, itching, peeling, which go away on their own during further treatment.
In very rare cases when using the gel skin allergic reactions (rash), contact dermatitis, folliculitis are possible.
Pregnancy use
Given the low systemic bioavailability and low toxicity of azelaic acid it is possible to use the drug during lactation (breast-feeding), as the amount of azelaic acid that may get to the baby with the breast milk is small and does not involve any danger.
Possible risks of the drug during pregnancy have not been identified in experimental studies on laboratory animals.
