Primafungin is an antifungal polyene antibiotic of the macrolide group with a broad spectrum of action. It has a fungicidal effect. Natamycin binds sterols of cell membranes, disrupting their integrity and function, which leads to the death of microorganisms.
It is active against most pathogenic yeast-like fungi (especially Candida albicans), dermatophytes (Trichophyton, Microsporum, Epidermophyton), yeasts (Torulopsis, Rhodotorula), other pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, Cephalosporium) and against some protozoa (trichomonads). It has no effect on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Resistance to natamycin in clinical practice does not occur.
Pharmacokinetics
It has no systemic action as it is practically not absorbed from the surface of mucous membranes. Vaginal suppositories under the influence of body temperature melt, forming a volumetrically spreading frothy mass, which contributes to the uniform distribution of the active substance in the mucous membrane.
Indications
Fungal infections of the vulva and vagina; for prophylactic purposes during treatment with cytostatics, glucocorticoids or broad-spectrum antibiotics.
