Clinical and Pharmacological Group
Antifungal drug for external use.
Pharmacological action
Antifungal polyenic antibiotic of the macrolide group with a broad spectrum of action. It has a fungicidal effect. Natamycin binds sterols of the cell membrane of the fungus, disrupting its integrity and function, which leads to cell death.
Pharmacodynamics
The majority of pathogenic yeast fungi, especially Candida albicans, are sensitive to natamycin. Dermatophytes are less sensitive to natamycin. Resistance to natamycin has not been noted in clinical practice.
Pharmacokinetics
In application to the skin and mucous membranes practically does not undergo systemic absorption, so it has no systemic action.
Indications
Fungal diseases of the skin and mucous membranes caused by pathogens sensitive to the drug (including vaginitis, vulvitis, vulvovaginitis, balanoposthitis caused by fungi of the genus Candida; candidiasis of the skin and nails; otitis externa, either primarily caused by fungi, or complicated by candidiasis; ringworm).
