Orvirem, syrup for children 2 mg/ml 100 ml

It has antitoxic effect in acute respiratory infections and influenza caused by type B virus.

The peculiarity of the drug is that in it rimantadine is fixed on a matrix of sodium alginate.

This allows Orvirem to provide prolonged circulation of the drug with a decrease in its toxicity because in this dosage form rimantadine is not released immediately, which gives a gradual and prolonged release into the blood.

The degree of toxicity of rimantadine is decreased and the pharmacokinetics and mechanism of action of the drug are improved.

Indications

Prevention and treatment of flu and SARS in children from 1 to 7 years.

Active ingredient

Composition

5 ml (1 teaspoon):
– rimantadine hydrochloride 10 mg

Excipients:

sugar,

sodium alginate,

dye E122,

purified water.

How to take, the dosage

When treating the drug Orvirem is taken orally (after meals) with water, according to the following scheme:

– children from 1 to 3 years – on the 1st day 10 ml (2 teaspoons) of syrup (20 mg) 3 times/day.
– on the 1st day 10 ml (2 teaspoons) of the syrup (20 mg) 3 times per day (daily dose – 60 mg); on the 2nd and 3rd days – 10 ml 2 times per day (daily dose – 40 mg). (daily dose – 40 mg), on day 4 – 10 ml once a day (daily dose – 20 mg). (daily dose – 20 mg);

– children from 3 to 7 years – on the 1st day – 15 ml (3 tea spoons) of the syrup (30 mg) 3 times a day. (daily dose – 90 mg); on days 2 and 3 – 3 teaspoons 2 times per day. (daily dose – 60 mg), and on day 4 – 3 teaspoons once daily. (daily dose – 30 mg).

For prophylaxis the drug Orvirem is prescribed:

– children from 1 to 3 years – 10 ml (2 teaspoons) of syrup (20 mg) 1 time/day.

– children from 3 to 7 years – 15 ml (3 teaspoons) of syrup (30 mg) once a day for 10-15 days depending on the focus of infection.

The daily dose of rimantadine should not exceed 5 mg/kg body weight.

Interaction

When used together, Orvirem® reduces the effectiveness of antiepileptic drugs.

When concomitant use, adsorbents, astringents and coagulants decrease absorption of rimantadine.

Drugs that acidify the urine (acetazolamide, sodium bicarbonate) increase the effectiveness of rimantadine by reducing its excretion by the kidneys.

When used together acetylsalicylic acid, paracetamol decreases Cmax value of rimantadine by 11%.

Cimetidine decreases clearance of rimantadine by 18%.

Special Instructions

An exacerbation of chronic comorbidities is possible while taking Orvirem.

Epilepsy increases the risk of an epileptic seizure.

Orvirem syrup contains 60% sucrose, which should be taken into account when prescribing the drug to patients with diabetes.

It is possible that viruses resistant to the drug may appear.

Contraindications

– acute liver disease;
– acute and chronic kidney disease;
– thyrotoxicosis;
– pregnancy;
– lactation;
– children under 1 year old;
– hypersensitivity to Orvirem components.
The drug should be used with caution in case of epilepsy (including anamnesis).

Side effects

The drug Orvirem is usually well tolerated. Sometimes the following adverse reactions are observed.

Digestive system disorders: nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, flatulence, anorexia.

CNS disorders: headache, dizziness, insomnia, neurological reactions, impaired concentration.

Other: hyperbilirubinemia, allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, urticaria), asthenia.

Overdose

To date, no cases of overdose have been identified.

Pregnancy use

The drug Orvirem is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
