Oftan Katahrom, eye drops 10 ml

The components of Oftan Katahrom eye drops have a complex antioxidant effect, stimulate metabolism in the lens tissue and improve its trophism.

Cytochrome C is highly active with respect to free radicals, binds aggressive oxidant molecules and protects the lens and cornea from damage. It suppresses and prevents the development of lens opacity (cataracts).

Adenosine has a vasodilator effect, increases ocular circulation, activates the production and metabolism of intraocular fluid, has an antioxidant effect and reduces the severity of inflammation of the eye tissues.

Nicotinamide promotes regeneration of the lens cells, thus preventing the development of cataracts.

Pharmacokinetics

Intake and distribution

When used topically, cytochrome C is not absorbed into the systemic bloodstream.

Adenosine penetrates well through the cornea.

Metabolism and excretion

Cytochrome C is fully metabolized in the body by the same routes as amino acids, and heme is broken down to bilirubin, which is excreted with bile.

Adenosine is metabolized practically in all tissues to form inosine, xanthine and urate, which are excreted in the urine. Ribose, which is part of the adenosine molecule, is metabolized to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and then to pyruvate and is finally broken down in the Krebs cycle. The T1/2 of adenosine from plasma is less than 1 min.

Nicotinamide is partially metabolized to nicotinic acid. Both compounds are methylated to form N-methylnicotinamide, which is further cleaved in the liver. The unmethylated nicotinamide and metabolites are excreted in the urine.

How to take, the dosage

Conjunctivally. The drug is put in 1-2 drops into the affected eye, 3 times a day.

Special Instructions

The eye drops contain benzalkonium chloride as a preservative, which may precipitate on soft contact lenses. Therefore, patients who wear contact lenses should remove them before using the drops and put them back in no earlier than 15 minutes after application.

Please avoid contact of the tip of the bottle with anything, as this may contaminate the product.

Impact on driving and operating machinery

Oftan Katahrom does not affect the ability to drive and operate machinery.

Contraindications

Individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

Side effects

Short-term eye irritation symptoms may occur immediately after injection, potentially side effects caused by nicotinic acid (nausea, decreased blood pressure, shortness of breath, dizziness).

In rare cases, allergic manifestations may occur (reddening of the conjunctiva, contact dermatitis in the eyelid area). In this case the drug should be discontinued.

Overdose

Due to the slight absorption into the blood and the rapid breakdown of the active ingredients no serious reactions associated with overdosing have been found when using the drops.

In case of such reactions symptomatic therapy is indicated.

Pregnancy use

There is not enough experience of using the drug Oftan Katahrom during pregnancy and lactation (breast-feeding).

The drug Oftan Katahrom may be used during pregnancy and lactation when prescribed by a physician and in cases when the expected benefits of therapy for the mother exceed the potential risk to the fetus or the infant.

Preventive use in children

Preventive use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age (due to lack of data on the efficacy and safety of the drug in children and adolescents).
