Stimulates alpha-adrenoceptors: in low concentrations it has mainly α2-adrenomimetic effect, in high concentrations it also acts on α1-adrenoceptors.

Constriction of vessels at the site of application. When administered intranasally it reduces swelling of the mucous membrane of the upper airways, facilitates nasal breathing, reduces blood flow to the venous sinuses. When injected into the conjunctival sac it reduces conjunctival edema.

The action starts 15 minutes after application; its duration is 6-8 hours.

Pharmacokinetics

In topical administration (spray) oxymetazoline undergoes little systemic absorption, so its concentration in blood plasma is negligible.

It is mainly excreted unchanged in the urine and feces. T1/2 is 5-8 days.

Indications

Acute rhinitis (including allergic), vasomotor rhinitis, paranasal sinusitis, eustachitis, otitis media; to narrow the vessels of the mucous membrane for diagnostic purposes (under medical supervision).

Special instructions

The recommended dosage can be used for no more than 3 days without consulting a doctor.

Avoid contact of the drug intended for intranasal administration with the eyes.

The drug affects vision (if it comes into contact with the eyes), and the reaction rate may decrease.

In dosages exceeding recommended doses, may affect the ability to drive a vehicle or operate equipment.

Composition

Active ingredient:

oxymetazoline hydrochloride – 0.5 mg;

Excipients:

menthol,

eucalyptus oil,

disodium edetate,

diodium hydrogen phosphate dode-cahydrate,

propylene glycol,

benzyl alcohol,

water for injection up to 1 ml.

Pregnancy

The drug is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Contraindications

atrophic rhinitis;
pregnancy;
lactation period (breastfeeding);
children under 6 years of age;
hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.

The drug should be prescribed with caution in case of chronic heart failure, arrhythmia, severe atherosclerosis, arterial hypertension, thyrotoxicosis, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, and angle-closure glaucoma.

Side Effects

Local reactions: transient dryness and burning of the nasal mucosa, dry mouth and throat, sneezing. With long-term use – tachyphylaxis, reactive hyperemia of the mucous membrane and atrophy of the nasal mucosa.

Systemic reactions: increased blood pressure, increased anxiety, nausea, dizziness, headache, insomnia, palpitations, sleep disturbances.

Interaction

Slows down the absorption of local anesthetic drugs and prolongs their effect.

Co-administration of other vasoconstrictor drugs increases the risk of side effects.

When monoamine oxidase blockers and tricyclic antidepressants are prescribed simultaneously, blood pressure increases.

Overdose

Symptoms: tachycardia, increased blood pressure, depression of the central nervous system.

Treatment: symptomatic.
