Iodine drug. When iodide enters the epithelial cells of the thyroid follicle, iodine ions are oxidized under the influence of the enzyme iodide peroxidase to form elemental iodine, which is incorporated into the tyrosine molecule.

In this process, one part of the thyrosine radicals in thyroglobulin is iodized, resulting in the formation of thyronines, the main ones being thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

The thyronins form a complex with the protein thyroglobulin, which is deposited in the colloid of the thyroid follicle.

Iodine entering the body in physiological amounts, prevents the development of endemic goiter (associated with iodine deficiency in food), normalizes the size of the thyroid gland in infants, children and adolescents, and also affects rates of T3/T4 ratio and thyroid hormone levels.

How to take, the dosage

Prevention of endemic goiter

Infants and children: 50-100 mcg of iodine/day.

Adolescents and adults: 100-200 mcg of iodine/day.

In pregnancy and during breast-feeding: 150-200 mcg of iodine/day.

Preventing relapse of goiter after its surgical removal

100-200 mcg of iodine daily

Treatment of diffuse euthyroid goiter

Newborns, children and adolescents: 100-200 mcg of iodine/day.

Young adult patients: 300-500 mcg of iodine/day.

The daily dose of the drug should be taken in a single dose, after meals, with plenty of fluids.

The duration of taking Mikroiodide is determined by the doctor.

The use of the drug for prophylactic purposes is usually over a period of months or years, and often over a lifetime.

In children and adolescents, a 6 to 12 month course of treatment is usually required.

Interaction

The efficacy of treatment with thyrotestics is reduced when iodine is taken at the same time. Potassium perchlorate and thiocyanate inhibit iodine absorption by the thyroid gland.

Thyroid hormone improves iodine absorption by the thyroid gland and stimulates the production of its hormones. Taking high doses of iodine and concomitant administration of potassium-saving diuretics can lead to hyperkalemia.

The simultaneous administration of high-dose iodine therapy and lithium preparations promotes goiter and hypothyroidism.

Contraindications

Side effects

When using Mikroiodide according to indications and in recommended doses, the occurrence of side effects is unlikely.

Iodine-induced hyperthyroidism is possible with long-term administration of high doses of the drug (more than 300 mcg per day) (especially in elderly patients with nodular goiter or toxic adenoma).

In therapy with high doses of iodine (more than 1 mg per day) iodine-induced goiter and hypothyroidism may develop in individual cases.

Sometimes allergic reactions develop: extremely rare – hypersensitivity reactions combined with “iodine” rhinitis; iodododerma, exfoliative dermatitis, Quincke’s edema.

In rare cases, continuous use of the drug may lead to the development of “iodism” which is manifested by metallic taste in the mouth, swelling and inflammation of mucous membranes (rhinitis, conjunctivitis, bronchitis), iodine fever, iodine acne, salivary gland swelling.

Overdose

There are no data on overdose of Mikroiodide.

Pregnancy use

The need for iodine increases during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Microiodide is prescribed when the intake of iodine with food is less than 150-300 mcg per day.

The drug penetrates well through the placenta and may cause the development of hypothyroidism and goiter in the fetus.

Iodine is also excreted with breast milk.

Therefore, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the drug should be used only in the recommended doses.
