Memantine is a drug that improves brain metabolism and is used for the treatment of dementia; it has a myorelaxant effect. It has nootropic, cerebrovasodilator, antihypoxic, neuroprotective and psychostimulant effects.
As a non-competitive antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-receptors it has modulating effect on glutamatergic system.
It regulates ion transport; blocks calcium channels,normalizes membrane potential, improves nerve impulse transmission, improves cognitive processes, memory and learning ability, increases daily activity.
Indications
– Alzheimer’s type dementia;
– vascular dementia;
Mixed dementia of all degrees of severity.
Active ingredient
Composition
1 ml – memantine hydrochloride 10 mg.
Auxiliary substances:
Potassium sorbate – 2.0 mg,
Sorbitol – 70.0 mg,
Purified water – up to 1 ml.
How to take, the dosage
It is set individually. It is recommended that treatment begin with the lowest effective dose.
The daily dose is divided evenly into several doses throughout the day. The drug should be taken with meals; the last dose should be taken before dinner.
In adults, the drug is given at a dose of up to 5 mg/day (12 drops) during the first week of therapy; during the second week at a dose of up to 10 mg/day (24 drops); during the third week at 15-20 mg/day (36-48 drops).
If necessary, further weekly dose increases by 10 mg until a daily dose of 30 mg (72 drops) is achieved.
The approximate maintenance dose is 10-20 mg/day (24-48 drops).

Special Instructions
In elderly patients, it is preferable to prescribe the drug in drops.
The optimal dose is reached gradually, increasing the dose every week.
For patients with impaired renal function, the dosing regimen is adjusted individually, depending on clinical effectiveness, with monitoring of renal function during treatment.
With caution, use while working for drivers of vehicles and people whose profession involves high concentration.
Contraindications
– marked renal and hepatic dysfunction;
– pregnancy;
– breast-feeding;
– children under 18 years of age (due to insufficient data);
– hypersensitivity to the drug.
With caution: the drug is prescribed in case of thyrotoxicosis, epilepsy, convulsions (including those in anamnesis), myocardial infarction, heart failure.
Side effects
Adverse reactions are classified according to clinical manifestations (according to affected specific organ systems) and by frequency of occurrence: very common (⥠1/10), common (⥠1/100 to < 1/10), not common (⥠1/1,000 to ⤠1/100), rare (⥠1/10,000 to ⤠1/1,000), very rare (⤠1/10,000).
1Hallucinations have been observed mainly in patients with Alzheimer’s disease at the stage of severe dementia.
Overdose
Symptoms: manifestations of the described side effects may worsen.
Treatment: gastric lavage, administration of activated charcoal; symptomatic therapy if necessary.
