Pharmic action:
Lopedium is an antidiarrheal symptomatic drug.
Binding to opioid receptors of the intestinal wall, loperamide reduces tone and motility of intestinal smooth muscle. Slows down peristalsis and increases the time of passage of intestinal contents. Increases the tone of the anal sphincter. Helps to retain feces and reduce the urge to defecation.
The action comes quickly and lasts for 4-6 hours.
Indications
Stool regulation in patients with ileostoma.

How to take, the dosage
Ingestion. Tablets and capsules should be swallowed without chewing and with 100 ml of water.
In adults with acute and chronic diarrhea, initially 4 mg, then 2 mg after each act of defecation in case of liquid stools. The maximum daily dose is 16 mg.
Children over 6 years of age are prescribed 2 mg after each act of defecation in case of liquid stools. The maximum daily dose is 6 mg.
After normalization of stools or if stools are absent for more than 12 hours, treatment should be discontinued.
Special Instructions
If there is no effect after 2 days of treatment with Lopedium, the diagnosis must be clarified to rule out an infectious genesis of the diarrhea.
If constipation or bloating occurs during treatment, the drug should be stopped.
In patients with impaired liver function, careful monitoring of signs of toxic CNS damage is necessary.
The loss of fluids and electrolytes must be replenished during treatment.
Each tablet or capsule of Lopedium corresponds to 0.01 IU.
The effect on driving and operating machinery
In case of drowsiness or dizziness, refrain from driving and operating machinery.
Contraindications
With caution: liver failure.
Side effects
Headache; gastralgia, dry mouth, allergic reactions (skin rash), drowsiness or insomnia, dizziness, intestinal colic, nausea, vomiting, constipation.
Extremely rare – intestinal obstruction.
Overdose
Symptoms: central nervous system depression (stupor, coordination disorders, drowsiness, miosis, muscle hypertonicity, respiratory depression), intestinal obstruction.
Treatment: the antidote is naloxone; given that loperamide has a longer duration of action than naloxone, the latter may be reintroduced.
Symptomatic treatment: activated charcoal, gastric lavage, artificial lung ventilation.
Medical observation for at least 48 hours is necessary.
